Fix an AMD Display Driver Missing in Windows 11 for Free

A free Windows 11 fix starts with identifying whether the missing driver belongs to the AMD Radeon adapter or the monitor, then choosing the right official driver source.

If Windows 11 lists Microsoft Basic Display Adapter instead of your AMD Radeon graphics device, install the correct graphics driver for your exact PC and GPU. For a laptop or all-in-one PC, check the computer maker’s driver page first; for a compatible desktop Radeon card, use AMD’s official driver detector or product selector. If only the monitor’s name or display modes are missing, that is a different issue and installing Radeon software may not fix it.

First, check what Windows says is missing

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand Display adapters and note the exact entry. Menu wording may vary slightly by system.
  2. If it says Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is using its built-in generic display adapter driver because a manufacturer-specific adapter driver is not available or installed. Microsoft recommends installing the display adapter manufacturer’s driver for features such as improved performance, smoother video, higher resolutions, and multi-monitor support. Microsoft explains the basic display adapter.
  3. If it lists an AMD Radeon device, write down its name. If the issue is instead the monitor’s name, identification, or available modes, note the monitor model and check its maker’s support information; the graphics adapter and monitor are separate devices.

Also identify the exact computer or laptop model. The right driver depends on the Radeon product and, for many laptops and all-in-one PCs, the system manufacturer’s customization.

Choose the right driver source

Your setup or symptom Start here Why
Desktop PC with a compatible Radeon graphics card AMD Auto-Detect and Install or AMD’s product selector AMD’s tools help locate a compatible Radeon package; manual selection requires the actual graphics model.
Laptop or all-in-one PC with AMD graphics Your computer maker’s support page for the exact model AMD recommends OEM drivers for these systems because they may be customized and validated for system-specific features.
Only the monitor identity or modes seem wrong Check the monitor maker’s support page and the exact monitor model A Radeon graphics package is not established as a universal fix for monitor identification.

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition supports compatible Radeon products on Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, but support is product-specific. AMD’s installation guidance, updated February 9, 2026, describes the current process and links to its Auto-Detect and Install tool and product selector. Do not treat a model or package shown as an example on AMD’s page as a recommendation for different hardware.

Install the AMD driver on a compatible desktop Radeon PC

  1. Go to AMD’s Adrenalin installation page. Use Auto-Detect and Install, or select your exact Radeon product manually.
  2. Download the package offered for your GPU and Windows version. If you select a package manually, verify that the product name matches the graphics adapter you recorded in Device Manager.
  3. Launch the downloaded installer, review the license terms, and choose the default installation or an available custom option as appropriate.
  4. Complete setup and restart if prompted. AMD says the display may flicker briefly during installation; this is normal.
  5. Open Device Manager again and check Display adapters to see whether Windows now lists the Radeon device rather than Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

For a laptop or all-in-one, start with the PC maker

Search the support site of the computer’s manufacturer using the exact laptop or all-in-one model, then look for its Windows 11 graphics driver. AMD advises using OEM-provided drivers for these systems because the maker may tailor and validate them for system-specific features. If an AMD.com package causes problems, AMD also advises trying the OEM driver. Its 25.6.3 release notes repeat this guidance; that older release is not a recommendation to install that version.

If the monitor itself is the missing device

When Windows shows the AMD adapter correctly but the monitor is unnamed or expected display modes are unavailable, do not assume that Adrenalin will install a model-specific monitor driver. Check the monitor’s exact model and the monitor maker’s official support page for any Windows driver or setup instructions. The sources here do not establish a universal monitor-driver package or a single fix for that symptom.

If the fix does not work

  • AMD’s installer does not recognize the GPU: confirm the exact PC and Radeon models, then use the computer maker’s support page for a laptop or all-in-one, or AMD’s product selector for a desktop card.
  • The AMD package installs but causes problems on a laptop or all-in-one: try the system maker’s OEM graphics driver, as AMD recommends.
  • The Radeon adapter appears correctly but the monitor issue remains: continue with the monitor maker’s model-specific support rather than treating it as a missing Radeon adapter driver.
  • You are offered a driver by a third-party updater: use official AMD, Microsoft, or computer-manufacturer support sources instead; the cited guidance does not require a third-party updater.
