AirPods are usually plug-and-play in Microsoft Teams, but you’ll occasionally hit a stubborn audio mismatch: Teams hears the wrong input device, the mic is “available” but muted, or the wrong AirPods mode is selected. The result is often one-way audio or no sound at all.
This guide walks through the fixes that actually work across Windows 11, macOS, iPhone/iPad, and Teams on the web. Follow them in order—most issues are resolved by selecting the correct playback and microphone devices inside Teams and the OS, then updating firmware.

Why AirPods Fail in Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams is picky about audio routing. Even when your AirPods are connected to your device, Teams may still use a different default speaker or microphone (like your laptop mic), or it may select an audio profile that limits the mic during meetings.

What You Need Before You Start
- AirPods connected to the same device you’re using for Teams (Windows/macOS/iOS/iPadOS/browser session).
- Teams desktop app or Teams mobile app updated to the latest version.
- OS audio permissions enabled for Teams (especially on macOS and iOS).
- Optional but recommended: an AirPods firmware update completed via iPhone/iPad (Apple updates through iOS).
Quick Fixes That Solve Most AirPods/Teams Issues
Before changing settings, do these fast checks—often they resolve one-way audio immediately.
- Reconnect AirPods: Put both AirPods back in the case for 10 seconds, close the lid, then open and re-pair (or re-select them).
- Close and reopen Teams: Fully quit the app, then relaunch.
- Join the meeting again: Leave the meeting and rejoin to force device re-enumeration.
- Check the Teams mute icon: Make sure you’re not muted at the meeting level.
- Test audio inside Teams if your UI shows speaker and mic test options.
Fix on Windows 11 (Teams Desktop)
On Windows 11, Teams commonly picks the wrong default input/output device even though your AirPods are connected.
- Set AirPods as default in Windows
- Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar → Sound settings.
- Under Output, choose your AirPods (often shows as Speakers (AirPods) or AirPods (Stereo)).
- Under Input, choose your AirPods microphone (often shows as AirPods (Hands-Free) or similar).
- Set the devices inside Teams
- Open Microsoft Teams.
- Click your profile picture → Settings.
- Go to Devices.
- Set Speaker to AirPods and Microphone to the AirPods mic.
- Hit Make a test call or use the mic/speaker test controls if available.
- Disable background calls/voice overlays (optional but helpful)
- If you’re using other apps (Zoom, eBay voice sellers, browser tabs with mic access), temporarily close them and retry.
- Restart the Bluetooth audio stack (if device selection won’t stick)
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on in Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
- Then reselect AirPods in Teams → Devices.
If Teams still refuses the AirPods microphone, you may be stuck on the wrong Bluetooth profile. See the Audio Device Type section below.
Fix on macOS (Teams Desktop)
On macOS, permissions and device selection inside both macOS and Teams are the two most common failure points.

- Enable microphone access for Teams
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- Turn on permission for Microsoft Teams.
- Select AirPods in macOS Sound settings
- Go to System Settings → Sound.
- Under Output, choose AirPods.
- Under Input, choose the AirPods microphone (or Hands-Free).
- Select AirPods inside Teams
- Open Teams.
- Click your profile picture → Settings.
- Go to Devices (or Permissions depending on Teams version).
- Set Speaker and Microphone to AirPods.
- Restart Bluetooth connection
- Turn Bluetooth off and on in macOS or disconnect/reconnect AirPods in Bluetooth settings.
Mac devices can show multiple “AirPods” entries. Choose the one that explicitly lists input (mic) when possible.
Fix on iPhone and iPad (Teams Mobile)
On iOS/iPadOS, the main blockers are microphone permission and AirPods switching between devices.
- Confirm Teams microphone permission
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- Turn on permission for Microsoft Teams.
- Check AirPods connection
- Make sure AirPods are connected to the same iPhone/iPad running Teams.
- If you use automatic switching via iCloud, temporarily disable it in AirPods settings to prevent mid-call handoffs.
- Set audio route in Teams
- Join a meeting and look for the audio route control (usually a speaker/earphone icon).
- Select AirPods as the audio output.
If your mic still doesn’t work, disconnect AirPods, then reconnect before rejoining the meeting.

- Grant browser microphone access
- Click the site icon/address bar icon in your browser (Chrome, Edge, or Safari) → allow Microphone.
- Confirm browser audio input/output
- Use your OS sound settings to set AirPods as the default output/input.
- If your browser supports device selection, set the input to the AirPods mic.
- Set devices in Teams web UI
- Open meeting controls and select the correct speaker/microphone devices if the UI provides them.
Then leave the meeting and rejoin so the web app reinitializes audio devices cleanly.
Check the Audio Device Type: A2DP vs Hands-Free
AirPods typically appear as different entries depending on the Bluetooth profile. On Windows you’ll often see at least two relevant device types: one for music/speaker (A2DP) and one for calls/mic (Hands-Free).
- Use A2DP for Speaker when available (better sound quality).
- Use Hands-Free for Microphone if that’s what provides the mic input.
Inside Teams (and sometimes in Windows Sound settings), choose the exact device entry that corresponds to mic input when your microphone fails.
Update Firmware and Software (Often Required)
AirPods firmware is updated through iPhone/iPad. Teams updates come from Microsoft via the Microsoft Teams app installer/auto-update.

- Automatically on, automatically connected
- Easy setup for all your Apple devices
- Quick access to Siri by saying “Hey Siri”
- Double-tap to play or skip forward
- New Apple H1 headphone chip delivers faster wireless connection to your devices
- Update AirPods firmware via iPhone/iPad
- Place AirPods in the charging case and keep them near your iPhone.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, open the case near your iPhone, and follow any prompts.
- Keep iOS updated (for example iOS 17.x) so firmware update paths work reliably.
- Update Microsoft Teams
- Windows/macOS: ensure Teams is updated in the app (or reinstall/Update through Microsoft’s standard updater).
- If you’re using Teams on the web, update your browser (Chrome/Edge/Safari/Firefox latest) and clear site permissions for mic if needed.
After updating, reconnect AirPods and test a call again.
Reset Bluetooth Audio Behaviors (Windows and macOS)
When device entries get stuck, “remove and re-pair” works better than repeated toggles.
Windows 11: Remove AirPods and Re-pair
- Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
- Find your AirPods entry → Remove device.
- Restart your PC.
- Pair AirPods again from Add device.
- Open Teams → Settings → Devices and select AirPods for Speaker and Microphone.
macOS: Forget Device and Reconnect
- Open System Settings → Bluetooth.
- Find AirPods → i (info) → Forget This Device.
- Restart Bluetooth or reboot the Mac.
- Reconnect AirPods and reselect them in System Settings → Sound and Teams.
When AirPods Work for Calls but Not for Mic (or Vice Versa)
This pattern usually means Teams is using the wrong input device type or the wrong mic profile.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- No mic / you’re heard as silent: pick the AirPods entry that mentions Hands-Free (Windows) or an AirPods input device (macOS/iOS permissions).
- You hear audio but can’t hear others: ensure Teams Speaker is set to AirPods output and that Windows/macOS Output is also AirPods.
- One-way audio changes mid-meeting: disable audio switching features (especially on iPhone/iPad), and avoid connecting AirPods to another nearby device during the call.
Common Mistakes That Keep AirPods from Working
- Only changing Teams speaker but leaving Teams microphone on your laptop mic.
- Picking the “wrong AirPods entry” (A2DP vs Hands-Free). You might get playback but no mic.
- Leaving Bluetooth multipoint switching enabled when you’re jumping between Mac/iPhone and rejoining meetings repeatedly.
- Browser mic not allowed when using Teams on the web.
- Meeting screen mute is set even though AirPods mic is selected.
Troubleshooting Table: Symptom → Fix
| Symptom | Most Likely Cause | What to Try |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods connected, no sound from Teams | Teams speaker set to wrong device | Teams → Settings → Devices: set Speaker to AirPods; also set OS Output to AirPods |
| You can hear, but nobody hears you | Teams mic set to wrong entry or mic permissions blocked | Teams → Devices: set Microphone to AirPods Hands-Free mic; check macOS/iOS microphone permission for Teams |
| Mic works in test call, fails in meeting | Device routing changes after join | Leave and rejoin; reconnect AirPods before entering; restart Teams |
| AirPods work in other apps but not Teams | Teams audio caching or browser permissions mismatch | Reopen Teams; on web, clear site mic permissions and re-grant; update Teams and browser |
| AirPods show multiple entries and selection won’t persist | Bluetooth profile conflict | Remove/re-pair AirPods; try selecting Speaker = AirPods (Stereo/A2DP) and Microphone = AirPods (Hands-Free) |
Alternatives if You Need Audio in a Hurry
If you’re mid-schedule and need a fast workaround, you can get to a working call immediately—even if you later want perfect AirPods mic behavior.
Best Value
- Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
- Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
- Use your AirPods case + device mic temporarily: Set Teams microphone to your laptop mic (or iPhone mic) while keeping AirPods as speaker.
- Switch audio route inside the meeting: Many Teams meeting windows let you select output and mic without reopening settings.
- Try a different browser (for Teams on the web): test Edge vs Chrome; mic permission UI differs and sometimes fixes the issue.
- Use a wired headset: A USB audio device often avoids Bluetooth profile problems completely.
Final Thoughts
When AirPods don’t work with Microsoft Teams, the fastest path is usually consistent: set the correct AirPods entry for Speaker and Microphone in Teams, confirm matching OS defaults, and handle Bluetooth profile differences (A2DP vs Hands-Free). If it still fails, remove/re-pair and update both Teams and AirPods firmware.
If you tell me your device (Windows 11 / macOS / iPhone) and whether you have one-way audio or no audio at all, I can narrow it to the exact setting to change first.
FAQs
Why do my AirPods connect but the Teams microphone is still my laptop mic?
Teams may be using a cached input device. Go to Teams Settings → Devices and explicitly select the AirPods mic entry (often labeled as Hands-Free on Windows).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can AirPods work for sound but not for mic in Teams?
Yes. That usually happens when Teams selects the AirPods output profile (A2DP) for the microphone too. Set Speaker to the stereo/A2DP entry and Microphone to the hands-free/call mic entry.
Does Teams on the web support AirPods microphones?
It does, but you must allow mic access in your browser and select the correct input device. If sound fails, re-grant site permissions and rejoin the meeting.
Do I need to update AirPods firmware to use them with Teams?
Not always, but firmware updates reduce Bluetooth profile quirks. If the issue started recently or only happens in Teams, updating AirPods via iPhone/iPad is a strong fix.
