If your YouTube stream started buffering after you changed OBS from CBR to VBR, switch the streaming encoder back to CBR first. YouTube’s live-encoder guidance specifies CBR for RTMP/RTMPS streams. Then check whether OBS is dropping frames on the way to YouTube or whether viewers are buffering during playback—those are different problems and need different fixes.
Why is my YouTube stream buffering after I changed OBS from CBR to VBR?
For a live stream sent to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) in its live encoder guidance. Set OBS’s streaming rate control back to CBR. YouTube’s references to variable bitrate (VBR) apply to uploaded video files, not its live-stream encoder setting.

That makes restoring CBR the right first correction, but it does not prove that VBR alone caused the symptom. “Buffering” can mean OBS is struggling to send the stream, or that YouTube viewers are having trouble playing it back. Check which is happening before changing more settings.

| OBS shows rising dropped frames or intermittent disconnections | OBS Stats and connection status; YouTube’s stream health | The connection from OBS to YouTube’s ingest server may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. |
| OBS appears connected and stable, but viewers report pauses | YouTube’s stream latency setting and reports from affected viewers | Investigate viewer playback. Lower latency can increase playback buffering. |
OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, explains: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” Dropped frames are a useful clue about the ingest connection, not proof that rate control by itself is the cause.

Should OBS use CBR or VBR for YouTube live streaming?
Use CBR for the live RTMP/RTMPS stream, in line with YouTube’s stated encoder guidance. Do not substitute YouTube’s VBR guidance for uploaded videos; uploading a finished file and sending a live stream are separate workflows.
In OBS, open Settings → Output, select the Streaming tab, and set Rate Control to CBR. OBS labels can vary by encoder, version, and output mode; make sure you are changing the streaming output rather than recording settings. Confirm the video bitrate while you are there.

Set a bitrate that matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate
YouTube’s live bitrate recommendations depend on the codec, ingest resolution, and frame rate. The following H.264 entries are YouTube recommendations, current when accessed in 2026—not guarantees that a particular internet connection can sustain the rate.
| H.264 stream format | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
Use the row for your actual codec and stream format in YouTube’s full live-encoding recommendations. The table is codec-sensitive: AV1 and H.265 have their own recommendations, so do not apply the H.264 figures to them. If the recommended rate is more than your connection can reliably sustain, reduce bitrate and, if needed, resolution or frame rate rather than holding on to a setting that causes network drops.

Check upload capacity and leave room for network variation
YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload bandwidth beyond the stream bitrate. For example, a 17 Mbps stream needs about 20.4 Mbps of available upload capacity to provide that headroom. This is a planning calculation from YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee: other devices, cloud backups, and network interruptions can consume capacity or create brief dips. Test upload performance, not just download speed, and check it under conditions similar to the planned stream. YouTube’s streaming tips discuss bandwidth and connection considerations.
How to fix dropped frames in OBS when streaming to YouTube
- Restore CBR. In OBS, go to Settings → Output → Streaming and set Rate Control to CBR.
- Match the bitrate to the stream. Confirm the codec, resolution, and frame rate, then use the corresponding row in YouTube’s live bitrate table. If your connection cannot sustain it, lower the bitrate and reassess.
- Check available upload headroom. Allow roughly 20% beyond the stream bitrate. Pause or account for competing uploads and devices that share the connection.
- Watch OBS Stats while streaming. If network dropped frames rise or the connection disconnects, the ingest path may be unstable or the configured bitrate may exceed what it can sustain. Lower the bitrate as a first adjustment, then check again.
- Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. OBS lists Wi-Fi among possible causes of unstable streaming and recommends wired networking. Trying Ethernet is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that every buffering problem will disappear.
- Check other network causes. OBS also lists VPNs, security software, network-prioritization software, outdated drivers, and router or modem issues as possibilities. Change one relevant factor at a time where practical, and compare the OBS connection indicators before and after.
- Test before the event. Run a stream with motion and audio similar to the planned broadcast, and watch YouTube’s stream health as well as OBS’s indicators. YouTube’s live encoder guidance explains its stream setup and health checks.
If OBS is stable but viewers still see buffering
When OBS shows a stable connection and viewers still report pauses, do not assume the encoder’s rate control is responsible. YouTube notes that lower-latency streaming may increase playback buffering. Review the stream’s latency mode in YouTube Studio and gather specific reports before changing the encoder again.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
- Ask whether the issue affects all viewers or only some.
- Record the affected viewers’ devices and playback qualities, such as whether the problem occurs at a particular resolution.
- Compare the timing of reports with OBS’s connection status and YouTube’s stream health.
YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance describes the trade-off between latency and playback buffering. If playback reports vary by viewer or device while the ingest connection remains stable, that is useful evidence to investigate separately from OBS dropped frames.
Common fixes that do not answer the diagnosis
- Changing only from VBR to CBR: This corrects the live rate-control setting to match YouTube’s guidance, but if OBS still drops frames, check bitrate and network stability too.
- Increasing bitrate to improve quality: A higher rate can worsen ingest drops if sustained upload capacity is insufficient. Match the YouTube recommendation to the available connection rather than increasing it blindly.
- Blaming VBR for every viewer pause: Viewer playback buffering can occur even when the broadcaster’s ingest connection looks stable. Check latency mode and collect viewer-specific details.
- Using a download-speed test as the only check: Streaming sends data out, so upload performance and competing network use matter.
