In Windows 11, check screen-off and sleep timers separately: they are not the screen saver timer. Microsoft does not identify one universal cause or fix for a screen saver that fails to launch on an otherwise working extended desktop.
1. Confirm Windows is using Extend mode
Press Windows+P and select Extend. This mode spreads the desktop across the displays, rather than showing the same desktop on both. To verify which display Windows identifies as each monitor, open Settings > System > Display and select Identify. If the on-screen display tiles do not match the monitors’ physical positions, drag them into the correct arrangement and apply the change. 2. Check the screen saver and its Wait interval
Open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Screen saver. Choose a screen saver instead of (None), then use Preview to check that it can run. Set Wait to a short, practical interval while testing, and leave the computer idle for longer than that interval. If the saver starts, restore the interval you actually want. The optional On resume, display logon screen setting controls whether Windows asks you to sign in again when activity resumes; enable it only if you want that behavior. 3. Distinguish the screen saver from screen-off and sleep
Windows can start a screen saver, turn off the displays, or put the PC to sleep after inactivity. These are separate behaviors, so the screen saver’s Wait value does not set the screen-off or sleep timeouts.

Windows 11 power timers
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Review Turn my screen off after and Make my device sleep after. Change one setting at a time and test so you can tell which timer affects what you see. Labels or available choices can vary with Windows updates, device configuration, or management policy. 4. Check presence sensing only if the option exists
Some Windows 11 devices have presence-sensing controls that can turn a screen off when you leave or wake it when you approach, with options that may apply to a connected external display. These settings depend on the PC’s hardware and management policy, so they will not appear on every device. If present, review them when a display turns off or wakes unexpectedly. 5. Troubleshoot cables and drivers only if the displays are unreliable
If both monitors are detected and work normally but the screen saver alone fails to launch, replacing hardware is not an established general fix. If a monitor disappears, flickers, or behaves inconsistently, troubleshoot the display connection separately:
- Check that cable connections are secure; test another cable or video port if available.
- Confirm that the PC’s display adapter supports the displays and their connection arrangement.
- If the issue began after a graphics-driver update, consider rolling back the driver. Microsoft also describes restarting the PC and resetting the graphics driver with Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B as display troubleshooting steps.
These steps address connection or display-adapter problems; Microsoft does not establish them as a general remedy for a screen-saver timer failure. Use Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guide if the monitors themselves are not behaving reliably.

6. Try a reversible display-arrangement check last
A Microsoft Q&A thread about a similar Windows 11 issue includes one user report of improvement after swapping the primary and secondary displays and reconnecting, plus suggestions to check power behavior and toggle between Duplicate and Extend. This is anecdotal and does not establish a cause or a dependable fix. If the settings above do not help, you can try a simple arrangement change or disconnect and reconnect the displays, then restore Extend mode and your preferred layout. Why a screen saver may not be necessary
Microsoft says, “While screen savers are no longer essential for preventing burn-in, they offer several benefits.” It also notes that screen savers can help prevent burn-in on OLED displays by avoiding prolonged static images, while sleep uses significantly less power than running a screen saver. A screen saver is therefore optional for many users, but you may still want one for appearance, privacy, or to reduce prolonged static display on an OLED. Windows 10 support status
The screen saver and multiple-display settings described here apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that does not mean its display settings stopped working, but supported security updates are a separate consideration.
