First inspect what the API actually returned, then check whether the destination requires authorized credentials. If you control the site, use its security logs to find the rule that blocked the renderer. If you do not, use an access method the site owner permits or ask for help—do not try to evade the site’s protections.
1. Confirm what the screenshot API returned
Before changing browser settings or retrying with different headers, establish whether the 403 came from the screenshot service or the destination website—and whether the response is an error or an image of an error page.

- Record the HTTP status, response headers and body, requested URL, and any request or trace ID. If the provider exposes redirects, record that chain too.
- Check the response content type and file. It may be an HTML denial, login page, or challenge instead of the requested screenshot, or the provider may have returned a structured API error. Providers report failures differently, so consult that service’s documentation.
- Compare the API’s result with a normal browser visit using an account you are authorized to use. A successful visit while signed in does not establish that an unauthenticated renderer can access the page.
Cloudflare says an unbranded 403 generally comes from the origin, while a branded 403 can be generated by Cloudflare security features. The status alone does not identify the denying layer; inspect the response and, if you administer the site, its security events. Cloudflare’s 403 guidance explains the distinction.
One provider-specific example: Screenshot API’s documentation says a 401 or 403 may indicate the returned image is a login or error page rather than the requested content. Treat that as a useful check for that provider, not as a universal behavior of screenshot APIs. Screenshot API documentation.

2. Check whether the destination requires authentication
Determine what the target page expects. It may be public, behind a web login, protected by HTTP Basic Authentication, or require a bearer token or another authorization header. The renderer must receive valid credentials through a method its provider documents, and you must be authorized to access the page.
Session cookies
A logged-in browser session is commonly represented by cookies. If the screenshot service supports cookies, use an authorized session and follow its documented format. Treat session cookies like passwords: do not paste them into public code, logs, shared tickets, or a service whose handling of credentials you have not accepted.
HTTP Basic Authentication
For a site that uses Basic Authentication, use the screenshot provider’s supported authentication parameter or mechanism. Cloudflare Browser Run documents an authenticate parameter for this case. Cloudflare’s screenshot endpoint documentation.

Authorization headers and API tokens
If the page expects a bearer token or another HTTP authorization scheme, use a documented custom-header option. Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation describes extra HTTP headers for token-based authentication, and its API reference lists cookie and authentication fields. Cloudflare screenshot API reference.

Do not send credentials to a screenshot provider unless you have permission to access the page and are comfortable with that provider handling the credentials. 3. Separate access denial from page-load timing
A page that renders slowly or loads its main content with JavaScript can produce an incomplete screenshot if capture happens too early. A wait for a known selector or for network activity to settle can help with that timing problem. Cloudflare documents networkidle0, networkidle2, and selector-based waits for rendered content. Waiting does not grant access. If the destination responds with a 403, changing a delay or wait condition will not authorize the request. Confirm authentication and the denial source first; tune waits only when the page is accessible but the desired content is missing at capture time.

Use the site’s security events or logs to identify the product and rule that denied the screenshot request. For Cloudflare, Security Events can help locate the blocking feature; its managed-rule troubleshooting guidance recommends examining the specific event and rule match. - Correct an unintended match in the particular rule.
- Add a scoped exception for known, authorized renderer traffic if appropriate.
- Use a supported, targeted Skip action for the relevant feature where available. Available actions depend on Cloudflare product and plan; confirm the current choices in your account.
Be cautious with an IP Access Allow rule. Cloudflare says it can bypass custom rules, rate limiting, WAF Managed Rules, and deprecated firewall rules. Do not treat a 403 as an invitation to defeat a challenge, disguise automated traffic, or work around an access policy. Use an account, session, or API credential the site owner permits; ask the owner whether the screenshot service is allowed and which authentication method to use; or contact your screenshot provider about supported, authorized access.
A custom user-agent is not a general bypass. Cloudflare explicitly says its Browser Run requests are identified as bots and that changing the configurable user-agent does not bypass bot protection. Cloudflare Browser Run documentation.

6. Choose a screenshot service by its documented access and error handling
If you can choose a renderer, compare whether it documents cookies, Basic Authentication, and custom authorization headers; how it distinguishes destination HTTP errors from screenshots of error pages; and whether it offers selector waits or navigation controls. Also decide whether you are permitted to send the page credentials to that service. The sources cited here document features for individual providers; they do not establish a comprehensive cross-provider ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can changing the user-agent fix a 403?
Not reliably. A user-agent change does not establish authorization, and Cloudflare says its Browser Run requests remain identified as bots.
Should I send my login cookies to a screenshot API?
Only if you are authorized to access the page and accept the provider’s handling of those credentials. Use the provider’s documented cookie mechanism and protect the values as secrets.
