If a secret scanner blocks git push, first identify what rejected the push and whether the flagged value is a real credential. Remove and revoke a genuine secret; use a documented, narrow exception for a verified false positive. A generic pre-receive hook declined message alone does not prove a secret scanner was responsible.
What does a blocked push actually tell you?
A server rejected the push, but the reason depends on the message. GitLab Secret Push Protection runs in a pre-receive hook and ordinarily blocks a detected secret. GitLab’s documentation says a block can identify the commit, filename and line, and secret type. GitLab Secret Push Protection documentation

By contrast, pre-receive hook declined is a generic server-side rejection. GitLab says pre-receive and update hooks can reject pushes; the message by itself does not identify which hook or policy did so. GitLab server-hook documentation
How to diagnose the rejection
- Read the full remote output. Note the host, repository, commit, file, line and secret type if reported. Preserve the complete error rather than relying on the final hook-declined line.
- Identify the rejecting control. Check whether the host’s built-in secret push protection is active or whether the repository uses a custom server-side hook or policy. If the output is generic, ask a maintainer to inspect configured hooks and server logs.
- Validate the finding. Determine whether the match is a usable token, key or password, a test fixture, or a false positive. Do not paste a potentially live credential into chat or an issue while investigating.
- Check platform settings and version. The behavior and available exception paths depend on the host, configuration and permissions. For GitLab, confirm the deployed version before interpreting a match in a changed file.
If the scanner found a real credential
Remove the credential from the commit being pushed and, if it has been exposed, revoke or rotate it with the service that issued it. Editing the current file may not be enough if the value remains in an earlier commit in the pushed history; correct the relevant commit history according to your team’s workflow, then retry the push. Treat the credential as compromised if it was already shared beyond a private local working copy.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Do not bypass protection merely to get the push through. A bypass does not make an exposed credential safe or remove it from Git history.

GitLab version and scan scope
GitLab’s documentation says that before GitLab 17.11, push protection could scan the contents of modified files rather than only the new diff. A secret already present in a file could therefore be flagged even if the latest change did not add it. GitLab says diff-only scanning began in 17.11. Check the instance version and the relevant file before concluding that the scanner found a newly introduced secret. - PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
The same documentation describes scan timeouts and unexpected scan errors as cases where a push may be accepted rather than blocked. Push protection is a useful control, not a guarantee that every secret will be detected.

GitHub exception handling
On GitHub, the available response depends on repository or organization configuration and your permissions. Where bypass is allowed, the contributor may be asked to give a reason; GitHub documents different alert and notification behavior depending on whether the reason concerns a real secret, a false positive or a test value. If delegated bypass is enabled and you lack bypass permission, GitHub can require a request to designated reviewers. If delegated bypass is not enabled, the configured controls may allow contributors to bypass without that review. Follow your organization’s policy rather than treating the existence of a bypass option as approval to use it. GitHub: Bypass requests for push protection
When and how to bypass protection
Use an exception only after checking the finding and confirming that the value is not a live credential—or after following your organization’s approved process for the specific case. Keep the exception as narrow and reviewable as possible, and record why it is justified.

GitLab
GitLab documents a per-push Git option, git push -o secret_push_protection.skip_all, and a commit-message marker, [skip secret push protection]. These skip the check; they are not ways to remediate a credential. GitLab Secret Push Protection is documented as generally available starting in GitLab 17.5 and as a GitLab Ultimate feature on GitLab.com, Self-Managed and Dedicated. Availability and configuration should be confirmed for your deployment. GitLab Secret Push Protection documentation

Should you turn the scanner off?
Not as the first troubleshooting step. First establish whether the rejection is from secret protection, validate the match, and address either the credential or the scanner/configuration issue. If disabling is genuinely necessary, request the smallest appropriate scope from a maintainer or administrator. The GitLab production runbook describes project-level disabling as preferable for a project-specific need; its service-wide disablement guidance is for significant performance degradation and administrative intervention, not ordinary developer troubleshooting.
