If a Google Wifi point won’t connect, first check power and the modem’s internet service, then verify the primary point’s Ethernet connection or an additional point’s mesh placement. Refresh Google Home and your phone before restarting the point. Save a factory reset for last: it erases settings and means setting up the network again.
Start by identifying which point will not connect
The primary Google Wifi point connects to your modem by Ethernet and depends on the modem’s internet connection. An additional point joins the existing mesh wirelessly or by Ethernet; its connection depends on the primary point and its position. The two situations call for different checks. Google’s product overview explains the system, and its setup guide covers adding points.

Note the exact message in Google Home, such as “Wifi point out of range,” “Connection issue,” “Something went wrong,” or “Problem connecting.” These messages can help distinguish a placement problem from setup or connection trouble.
Check power, the modem, and internet service
For the primary point
- Confirm both the modem and point are powered on.
- Check that the Ethernet cable is firmly seated in the modem and the primary point’s WAN port. Look for a loose connection or visible damage; Google lists loose, disconnected, or damaged cables among possible setup problems in its setup troubleshooting guidance.
- Confirm the modem is connected to your provider’s incoming service. A primary point cannot bring the network online if the modem has no internet connection.
Find out whether the ISP connection is down
Connect another device to the same Wi-Fi and turn off its cellular data, then try to reach the internet. If that device also has no access, contact your internet service provider about a possible outage. If it can get online, focus on Google Wifi, its setup, or the affected device instead. Google describes this distinction in its connection troubleshooting guide.

Check setup requirements and compatibility
Google’s current Google Wifi setup guide lists these prerequisites: a Google Account, the latest Google Home app, internet service, and a modem. The phone or tablet must run Android 9.0 or later or iOS 17.0 or later, according to that guide. Requirements may change; check the current setup instructions if your device or app does not match.
If the point was previously configured on another network, Google says to factory reset it before adding it to a new one. Do not reset a point merely because setup is taking time; try the checks below first.

- Google Wifi is a scalable, flexible mesh Wifi system that blankets your home in reliable coverage and keeps buffering at bay; 1 Google Wifi point replaces your router and additional points expand your network to keep the connection fast in every room[1]
- Google Wifi gives you whole home coverage[1]; 1 Pack covers up to 1500 square feet and 3 Pack covers up to 4500 square feet; points work together to create a mesh network for more coverage
- Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wifi remains fast, so you can stream with speed[1]
- Simple setup in a few steps; use the Google Home app to create your network and get online in minutes[2]
- Parental controls let you manage screen time, restrict certain kinds of adult content, and pause Wifi to specific devices on your mesh network whenever you want
Google Wifi can mesh with Google Wifi and Nest Wifi devices, but not Nest Wifi Pro. Google also recommends using devices from the country where they will be used, since regional wireless regulations can cause compatibility problems. See Google’s Google Wifi overview before combining devices from different generations or regions.

Read the status light for the correct device
Google Wifi and Nest Wifi points use different status-light meanings. Identify the hardware before interpreting its light; do not apply Nest Wifi guidance to a Google Wifi point.

| Nest Wifi point | Slowly pulsing yellow | Network error |
| Nest Wifi point | Solid red | An issue |
The meanings are from Google’s status-light reference. If a Google Wifi point has no light, check its power. If it remains unlit or red after the recommended troubleshooting steps, contact Wifi support.
Improve an additional point’s mesh connection
If the primary point works but an added point reports “Wifi point out of range” or has a poor connection, move it closer to the router or another point. Google recommends starting about halfway between the router and the area needing coverage, no more than two rooms from the router or another point. Put the point in an open area rather than behind physical obstructions.
Best Value
- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
After setup, run a mesh test in Google Home. If its result shows a poor connection, reposition the point and test again. Google’s placement guide explains the suggested placement and mesh test.
Restart before considering a factory reset
Restart without erasing settings
Unplug the point for 10–20 seconds, reconnect power, and wait 1–2 minutes for it to start. Google Home can also restart the whole network or an individual point. A restart does not erase network settings. Follow Google’s restart instructions if you need to restart through the app.
Factory reset only if the earlier checks fail
A factory reset erases the device’s settings and data, can interrupt internet service, takes several minutes, and means setting up the router and points again. For a Google Wifi point, Google’s physical-button procedure says to hold the button for 10 seconds until the specified light change; the reset may take up to 10 minutes. Do not unplug the point while it resets. Follow the exact steps in Google’s factory-reset guide.
