Fix a Compute Engine YouTube Stream That Stops When the VM Reboots

Configure a Compute Engine startup script or systemd service to relaunch your YouTube encoder after reboot, and verify the guest environment, logs and YouTube connection.

To make a YouTube encoder start again after a Compute Engine VM reboots, configure it to launch at boot: use a Compute Engine startup script for a simple launch command, or a systemd service for a long-running encoder that needs supervision. Then verify the guest environment, startup logs, encoder connection and YouTube Live Control Room. A reboot interrupts the running encoder, so automatic relaunch does not by itself guarantee that YouTube will resume the same live session.

Why the stream stops after a reboot

A VM reboot stops processes that were running in an interactive shell or terminal. Unless something starts the encoder again, it stays stopped after Linux boots. Google Cloud startup scripts are designed to run commands when a VM instance boots; the guest environment reads the VM metadata and runs the script. Public Compute Engine images include the guest environment, but custom images need it installed for metadata startup scripts to work. Google Cloud’s startup-script overview and its Linux startup-script guide describe the mechanism and setup.

There are two practical approaches: launch the encoder from startup metadata, or install it as a systemd service. The first is straightforward for a single command; a service is generally better suited to a process that should stay running and restart after failure. Google documents startup scripts and its guest services, but does not provide a ready-made unit file for a YouTube encoder.

Before changing the VM

  • Confirm the VM runs Linux. The boot-script instructions below apply to Linux.
  • Check that the Google guest environment is installed and running. It is preinstalled on public images; custom images may require manual installation. See About the guest agent.
  • Identify the actual encoder command and confirm it works when run manually.
  • Confirm the media files, mounted disks and configuration the encoder needs will be available when the VM starts.
  • Have the YouTube server URL and stream key available for the encoder configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains these connection settings.

Option 1: Start the encoder with a Compute Engine startup script

Use VM startup metadata for a simple, idempotent command that launches the encoder. Google runs Linux startup scripts as root, and they run only when network access is available. A VM-level metadata script overrides a project-level script, so check both scopes if a script you expect is not taking effect. Google documents the startup-script configuration in its Linux guide.

  1. Prepare the launch command. Use the command that starts your encoder, with paths and options that work outside your interactive session. Do not rely on a terminal window, shell profile or manually activated environment being present at boot.
  2. Make dependencies ready first. If the encoder reads media from a mounted disk or depends on a generated configuration file, arrange for those resources to be available before the launch command runs. Startup scripts run when network access is available, but that does not ensure every application dependency is ready.
  3. Add the script at the intended metadata scope. Configure it as VM-level metadata if it should apply only to this instance, or as project-level metadata if appropriate for multiple instances. Check for a VM-level override when troubleshooting.
  4. Protect the stream key. The encoder needs the YouTube stream key, but do not put it in a publicly readable script, repository or diagnostic output. Restrict access to the VM and project configuration that holds it.
  5. Reboot and inspect. After reboot, check whether the encoder process is running and inspect the startup-script log with sudo journalctl -u google-startup-scripts.service.

For diagnosis, Google also documents manually rerunning the startup script with sudo google_metadata_script_runner startup. Use this to investigate script behavior; it does not replace checking that the script runs during an actual boot.

Option 2: Run the encoder as a systemd service

A systemd service is a better fit when the encoder should run continuously, restart after a process failure or wait for specific startup dependencies. Configure a service that launches the real encoder command and enable it to start at boot. The Google Cloud documentation cited here does not prescribe an encoder-specific unit file, so adapt the service to the encoder and Linux image you use rather than copying an assumed universal configuration.

  • Use the full executable and media-file paths the service needs; services do not necessarily inherit the environment of your login shell.
  • Set the service to start at boot and configure restart behavior appropriate to the encoder process.
  • Ensure required disks, media and configuration are available before the service launches.
  • Keep the stream key private and limit access to any configuration file that contains it.
  • Inspect the service’s status and logs after reboot, then verify that it is actually sending content to YouTube.

Google describes its own guest services as systemd-based in About the guest agent; that documentation is not a ready-made YouTube encoder service recipe.

Startup script or systemd: which should you use?

Approach Best fit Strength What to watch
Compute Engine startup script A straightforward boot-time launch command Designed to run commands when the VM boots Check guest environment, metadata scope, network availability and script logs.
systemd service A long-running encoder that needs process supervision Can be configured to start at boot and restart after process failure Configure the service for the encoder’s real paths, dependencies and credentials; Google does not supply a YouTube-specific unit file.

Verify the YouTube connection after reboot

  1. Confirm the encoder process is running and its logs do not show a failed launch or connection.
  2. Check that the encoder is configured with the current YouTube server URL and stream key. These are part of YouTube’s encoder stream settings.
  3. Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that YouTube is receiving the encoder’s content and showing the stream as expected.
  4. Check whether the reconnect is part of the live session you intended. YouTube says that stopping encoder content ends the stream, and streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A reboot interrupts the encoder, and the cited documentation does not guarantee that a session will continue seamlessly across it.

Troubleshooting: the encoder still does not restart

  • No startup-script activity: Check that the Google guest environment is installed and active, and that the script is present in the intended metadata scope. A VM-level script can override a project-level script.
  • Startup script reports an error: Review sudo journalctl -u google-startup-scripts.service for the failed command or other error. You can manually rerun it with sudo google_metadata_script_runner startup while diagnosing.
  • The script runs, but the encoder cannot connect: Confirm network access, then check the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder configuration.
  • The process exits shortly after launch: Check the encoder’s own logs and confirm that the executable, media and configuration paths are valid when launched at boot. For a continuing process, consider supervising it with a systemd service.
  • Media or configuration is missing: Ensure mounted storage and generated files are ready before the encoder starts; a boot-time launch alone does not guarantee dependencies have finished initializing.
  • The encoder runs, but YouTube does not show the expected live stream: Check the Live Control Room and verify the configured server URL and stream key. A process running locally does not prove that YouTube is receiving content.

If your goal is a YouTube channel that plays uploaded recordings continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; it costs $9.99 per month monthly. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
