If your Chromebook says “ChromeOS is missing or damaged,” Google’s recovery process can reinstall the operating system—but it permanently erases files stored on the Chromebook, including downloads. If you can still sign in or access files, back up anything important before trying recovery. Start with a restart, then try a factory reset if you can sign in; use recovery if those steps do not resolve the error.
What the warning means—and what happens to your files
The message indicates that ChromeOS needs repair. Google’s recovery process removes and reinstalls the operating system. Google warns that “Recovery permanently erases everything on your Chromebook’s hard drive, even your downloaded files.” Google Chromebook Help: Recover your Chromebook.

Back up local files before recovery if the Chromebook still lets you sign in or access them. Files saved in cloud storage are distinct from files stored locally; the stated recovery warning applies to the Chromebook’s local drive. Do not proceed until you are prepared to lose local files you have not backed up.

- Turn the Chromebook off and on. If the error remains and you can sign in, continue to the next step.
- Reset it to factory settings. Follow Google’s reset instructions for your device. A factory reset removes local user data, so back up accessible files first.
- Use ChromeOS recovery if the error persists. Recovery is the reinstall step, not a way to preserve local files. For a work- or school-managed Chromebook, involve your administrator before resetting or recovering it.
Google’s recovery guidance recommends restarting first, then a factory reset if the Chromebook can be signed into, and recovery if those steps fail. See Google’s recovery steps.

Enter recovery mode on the right device
Recovery-mode controls depend on the device. For a standard Chromebook, first disconnect attached devices such as USB drives, memory cards, and other accessories. Then use this sequence:
- Hold Esc and Refresh (the circular-arrow key).
- While holding them, press Power.
- Release Power when the Chromebook starts, then release the other keys when the recovery message appears.
Some Chromebook models use Esc + Maximize instead of Esc + Refresh. Tablets, Chromeboxes, and Chromebits use different key combinations or recovery-button procedures. Check Google’s instructions for your device type rather than repeatedly trying the standard laptop sequence. Google’s recovery-mode instructions.

Choose internet recovery or a USB recovery drive
Internet recovery
Some newer Chromebooks offer recovery over the internet. If that option appears, follow the instructions on the screen. Availability depends on the model: older Chromebooks may not support internet recovery, and some older devices may no longer support updates or recovery. If the option is missing or unsupported, use USB recovery if Google provides it for your device.

USB recovery
USB recovery requires the affected Chromebook and a second working computer: another Chromebook, or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome. You also need a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating recovery media erases the drive, so move anything on it that you want to keep before using it.

- On the working computer, install and open Google’s Chromebook Recovery Utility.
- Use the utility to select the affected Chromebook’s model and create the recovery media on the USB drive.
- Insert the prepared drive into the affected Chromebook and follow the on-screen instructions. If prompted, choose recovery from the external disk.
- When the process finishes, remove the USB drive when instructed. You can erase recovery media later with the utility if you want to reuse the drive; erasing it also deletes its contents.
Use the model and recovery option the utility or Chromebook offers. Google’s instructions do not establish a particular connector type, speed rating, or drive brand as a requirement. Google’s USB recovery instructions.
Fix common recovery errors
- “An unexpected error has occurred” or “The device you inserted doesn’t contain ChromeOS”: Erase the recovery storage and create the media again, or try a different USB flash drive. If correctly created media still fails, the drive may be malfunctioning. Google’s troubleshooting steps are on its recovery help page.
- The Chromebook asks you to remove connected devices: Disconnect accessories and retry with only the recovery media attached.
- “The security module on this device isn’t working”: If the Chromebook is managed by work or school, contact the administrator. If the problem continues, Google advises contacting the manufacturer about repair; its guidance also points users to the Chromebook help forum. See Google’s error guidance.
- The recovery screen or procedure does not match these steps: Confirm the device type and model, then follow its specific instructions. Recovery controls differ across Chromebooks, tablets, Chromeboxes, and Chromebits.
If the problem is a failed update instead
A failed system update is not necessarily the same problem as a missing-or-damaged boot error. For an update that will not install, Google’s troubleshooting sequence is to restart, switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi or Ethernet if mobile data is causing the issue, reset the Chromebook, and use recovery only if needed. Recovery still erases local downloads. Work- or school-managed users who cannot update should contact their administrator. Check whether the Chromebook still receives updates
Recovery availability and software support are separate questions. Google says eligible Chromebook models released in 2021 or later receive 10 years of updates, according to its support guidance reviewed October 7, 2026. That does not mean every Chromebook has the same remaining support period: check the device-specific Auto Update Expiration date in Settings > About ChromeOS. Purchase date alone does not establish how long updates remain. Google Chromebook Help: Auto Update policy.
