It controls how the game server listens for connections, identifies itself, handles player capacity, and starts resources. It does not replace txAdmin’s panel settings: game-server settings belong in server.cfg or an included config file, while panel and staff settings belong in txAdmin.
What server.cfg does—and how FXServer reads it
FXServer runs server commands from several places, including its console, RCon, the command line, configuration files, and resources permitted by the access-control list. A configuration file collects the commands you want applied when the server starts. The startup command must point to the intended file; Cfx.re’s documented example is cd ~/FXServer/server-data && bash ~/FXServer/server/run.sh +exec server.cfg.

In a config file, put a value containing spaces in quotation marks. For example, the hostname My FiveM Server needs quotes, while a numeric value such as 32 does not.
Before editing, make a copy of the working configuration. Change a small group of related lines at a time, restart the server, and check the startup output. This makes a syntax or dependency problem easier to isolate than changing endpoints, permissions, capacity, and resources all at once.

A practical configuration, grouped by purpose
The following is a compact example, not a universal production template. Replace the example identity and license value, choose capacity and OneSync mode for your server, and keep only resources your setup actually uses.

ensure rconlogEach group has a different job. The lines below explain the choices and the common mistakes that can make a server unreachable, absent from the browser, or unable to start a resource.
Network endpoints: where the server listens
TCP and UDP bindings
endpoint_add_tcp binds a TCP endpoint; endpoint_add_udp binds a UDP endpoint. Both need a valid address and a port that is not already in use. The standard Cfx.re vanilla example uses port 30120 for both and notes that the port may need to change, particularly when a host has assigned a different port.

endpoint_add_udp "0.0.0.0:30120"0.0.0.0 means listen on available network interfaces. A specific bind address is generally relevant to a machine with multiple interfaces where the server should listen on a particular one. Do not substitute a public address or another interface address without knowing how the machine is configured.
Binding is not the same as reachability
These lines tell FXServer what local endpoints to bind; they do not, by themselves, make those ports reachable from outside the machine. The selected port must also be allowed through the host’s firewall and exposed by the provider or network configuration. The procedure varies by operating system and provider, so use the instructions for the environment where FXServer runs. If a host assigns ports, use the assigned value rather than assuming the example port is available.

If the server fails to start, check for a malformed address or a port conflict. If it starts but players cannot connect, verify both endpoint lines, the assigned port, and the relevant firewall or provider rules before changing unrelated settings.

License key and public server identity
Authenticate the server without exposing the key
The server license line uses a key obtained through the Cfx.re portal:
sv_licenseKey "YOUR_KEY"Replace the example text with your actual key, but never publish the real value in a public configuration, screenshot, log, or support post. Treat the license key like a password. The same caution applies to database credentials, RCon passwords, and any other secret stored alongside the configuration.
Set the name and project information
sv_hostname "My FiveM Server"
sets sv_projectName "My Project"
sets sv_projectDesc "A short sentence about the community"sv_hostname is the server-specific hostname. sets sv_projectName and sets sv_projectDesc provide project identity information. These are the first values to inspect if the server appears with the wrong name or project details. Keep descriptions accurate and concise, and quote text containing spaces.
sv_lan true makes the server LAN-only and skips public listing and license checks, according to the Cfx.re command reference. That is a specific operating mode, not a general fix for a server that is missing from the public browser. If the intent is a publicly reachable server, verify that LAN mode is not enabled, then check identity, endpoints, reachability, and startup errors.

Player capacity and OneSync must be configured together
sv_maxClients sets the maximum number of clients the server normally allows. Cfx.re’s 2026 command reference gives an integer range of 1 to 2048, but the number alone does not determine whether the server can support that many players in practice.
The OneSync mode determines which capacity settings are supported. Cfx.re documents onesync values of off, on, and legacy. The on mode provides full state awareness and entity routing. legacy is a compatibility mode and is not recommended for new deployments because of performance and graphical issues.

Choose the capacity you intend to run, then select a synchronization mode that meets its documented requirement and is compatible with your resources. Do not treat a higher slot number as a performance upgrade: CPU capacity, network conditions, resource load, and script design also affect how the server performs.
Game build selection
sv_enforceGameBuild selects the GTA game build used by the server. It matters when resources rely on DLC or other newer game content. The correct number depends on the content your resources require and the FXServer artifact you run. Check the current Cfx.re command reference and the resource’s requirements before setting a build number; an arbitrary value can create a mismatch rather than solve one.

What ensure does
An ensure line starts a resource. If that resource is stopped and a resource restart command is issued, ensure starts it again. Cfx.re’s default example includes:

ensure rconlogThis is a set of default resources, not a mandatory list for every live server. Frameworks and server recipes often use a different set. Review the resource’s manifest and README, plus any recipe instructions, before adding it. A resource that depends on another resource must be started after the dependency is available.
Organize the order deliberately
A useful general ordering is core resources first, framework resources next, then maps, vehicles, scripts, and optional utilities. It is a planning aid rather than a universal fixed sequence: a particular framework or resource can impose its own dependencies. Keep related entries grouped and check the dependency instructions when a resource fails at startup.
When a resource does not start, check that its folder name matches the name in the ensure line, that its manifest is present, and that required dependencies are installed and started first. The error may be in the resource or its load order, not in the endpoint or license settings.
Permissions and ACE access control
Access-control entries grant permissions to principals, including identifiers and groups. The official setup pattern includes examples like these:
add_principal identifier.fivem:1 group.admin
add_ace group.admin command allowThe example identifier and group are not automatically correct for your server. Use the identifiers of the people who should receive access and the group names used by your access model. An ACE rule grants only what its principal and permission expression specify; the administrator must make sure those names and rules line up.
A broad rule such as add_ace group.admin command allow permits commands for members of that group. Keep broad command access limited to trusted administrators. Where practical, grant only the narrower permissions staff need instead of giving an entire group unrestricted command access.
Security and privacy settings
ScriptHook plugins
sv_scriptHookAllowed 0This setting controls whether ScriptHook-based plugins are allowed. Cfx.re notes that setting it to 0 does not guarantee external plugins cannot be used. Treat it as one control, not a complete security boundary.
Player IP privacy
sv_endpointPrivacy trueWhen true, this setting hides player IP addresses from public reports output by the server. It changes what those reports disclose; it does not replace careful handling of logs, credentials, or access to administrative tools.
Secrets and support requests
Keep the license key, database passwords, RCon passwords, and other credentials in protected files or provider settings. Do not post a complete server.cfg in a support ticket: redact secrets while retaining relevant non-secret configuration and error output. If you split secrets into another file with exec, that included file remains part of the effective configuration and must be protected too.
RCon and included configuration files
Enable RCon only when needed
RCon lets an administrator send server commands through an RCon client. The official example leaves its RCon line commented until an administrator intentionally enables it. If you need RCon, use a strong secret and restrict exposure; if you do not need it, leave it disabled. The command reference notes that convars can be used from an RCon client, so an exposed RCon credential can affect server administration.
Split a large configuration with exec
exec another-file.cfg loads commands from another configuration file. This can make a large setup easier to organize and can help keep sensitive settings in a protected file. The trade-off is that the active configuration is no longer just the visible contents of server.cfg: inspect included files together when debugging a setting, a secret, or a startup failure.
What belongs in server.cfg versus txAdmin
txAdmin is a web administration panel included with FXServer builds above 2524. Its documented capabilities include a CFG editor and validator, start/stop/restart controls, and moderation functions. It is useful for editing and checking a config, but not every setting in the server environment belongs in that file.

The txAdmin documentation marks txAdminPort, txAdminInterface, and txDataPath convars as deprecated. Do not add those as a new panel configuration method without checking the current txAdmin release documentation. Keep game-server configuration and panel hosting configuration as separate concerns.

Troubleshoot common server.cfg problems in order
- Confirm the file being loaded. Start FXServer from the intended server-data directory and verify the command includes
+exec server.cfg. If the server is reading another file or no file, edits will appear to have no effect. - Check both endpoints. Verify TCP and UDP syntax, the port assigned by the provider, and whether another process already uses that port. Then check that the selected port is allowed through the relevant firewall and provider configuration.
- Validate the license line. Make sure
sv_licenseKeyis present and correctly quoted. Do not include the actual key when sharing logs or screenshots. - Investigate a missing browser listing. Check
sv_hostname, project name and description, whether LAN mode is enabled, endpoint reachability, and startup errors. A correct name alone cannot make an unreachable endpoint public. - Check capacity requirements. If players cannot exceed a low slot limit, compare
sv_maxClientswith the activeonesyncmode. Starting at 32 slots requiresonorlegacy; above 64 requireson. - Isolate a resource failure. Confirm the resource folder name, manifest, dependencies, and
ensureorder. Review recipe entries and resource documentation rather than treating every startup error as a configuration syntax problem. - Use the right editor for the right settings. txAdmin’s CFG editor and validator can help inspect the game-server config. Keep panel host settings in the current txAdmin environment configuration rather than mixing in deprecated panel convars.
Safe editing checklist
- Back up the working file before changing it.
- Use the host-assigned port where applicable, and keep TCP and UDP endpoint entries consistent with the intended listening port.
- Keep the actual license key and all other credentials out of public logs, screenshots, and support posts.
- Set player capacity and OneSync mode as a compatible pair.
- Use only the resources your setup needs, with dependencies started first.
- Review included config files as part of the same effective configuration.
- Manage game-server settings in the CFG and panel settings in txAdmin’s current configuration surface.
