Control Panel, Disk Management, System Information (msinfo32), Registry Editor, and Device Manager remain useful because they expose particular settings, diagnostics, or controls that may be harder to reach in newer Windows interfaces. That does not prove Microsoft has built nothing better: Settings handles many everyday tasks, and Microsoft continues to publish utilities such as PowerToys and Sysinternals. The stronger case is that these older tools still do specific jobs well.
What it means for these tools to have “survived since XP”
Windows XP support ended on April 8, 2014, according to Microsoft Support. That lifecycle date does not mean every utility discussed here originated with XP, nor that an XP-era computer stopped working when support ended. It means XP no longer receives Microsoft software or security updates.

The claim that Microsoft “still hasn’t built anything better” is an opinion, not a result established by comparative testing. Whether a newer interface is better depends on the task: a simpler Settings page can be more convenient for routine changes, while a specialized utility can offer a more detailed view or a control that the simpler page does not expose.
Which longstanding Windows tools are still useful?
Control Panel: a place to find some legacy or specific settings
Windows Settings is the more obvious starting point for many common configuration tasks. Control Panel remains useful when a particular setting or older workflow is easier to find there. The exact division changes across Windows versions, and there is no complete feature-by-feature audit establishing that Control Panel is universally more capable. Use the interface that exposes the setting you need rather than treating either one as the winner for every task.

Disk Management: inspect and manage disks and volumes
Disk Management provides a detailed view of disks, partitions, and volumes, and supports operations such as formatting or resizing volumes where applicable. The Storage view in Settings is more summary-oriented. That distinction matters when you need to understand how a disk is divided or use a supported volume operation, rather than simply review storage usage.
Because disk operations can change or remove data, confirm which disk and volume you have selected before making changes. Do not assume that a displayed operation is safe for the files on that volume.

System Information (msinfo32): a broader system inventory
The About page provides basic device details. System Information presents a broader view that can include hardware resources, components, software environment, drivers, and configuration details. It is useful when diagnosing a problem or gathering system information that the basic About page does not show.
To open it, search Windows for System Information, or press Win+R, enter msinfo32, and select OK. What appears can vary with the system and Windows version.

Registry Editor (regedit): direct access to configuration data
Registry Editor lets you inspect or change registry values, including configuration that may not be exposed through ordinary controls. That access is powerful precisely because an incorrect change can affect Windows or applications. It is not a general-purpose place to try undocumented tweaks.
Open it only when you have a specific, trusted instruction for the exact change you intend to make. Confirm the key and value carefully, and understand how to reverse the change before editing. If you do not know what a value does, leave it unchanged.

Device Manager: inspect hardware and driver state
Device Manager gives you a device-oriented view for inspecting hardware, properties, and driver state. It can help narrow down a hardware or driver issue when a general Settings page does not expose the relevant details. Calling it “unreplaced” is rhetorical; the narrower, defensible point is that it remains a useful troubleshooting interface.
How to choose between a classic utility and Settings
- Start with Settings for routine changes when it exposes the control you need.
- Open the specialized tool when you need a deeper inventory, a device-specific view, disk or volume operations, or a particular legacy setting.
- Consider the risk of changing state. Viewing system details is different from formatting a volume or editing the registry; confirm the target and consequences before applying changes.
- Do not infer universal superiority. The relevant comparison is the task supported, the depth of information or control, how easy the option is to find, and the risk of changing system state.
Microsoft still builds Windows utilities, but they are not direct replacements
Microsoft’s PowerToys documentation describes a free, open-source collection for power users and developers. Examples include FancyZones for arranging windows, Keyboard Manager for remapping keys, PowerToys Run for launching apps, and PowerRename for bulk renaming. The documentation was last updated September 14, 2026. These are useful additions, but they do not establish one-to-one replacements for the five management tools above.

- Simply Wireless: Forget about drop-outs and delays thanks to a strong, reliable wireless connection with up to 33 ft range (5); K270 is compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10 or later
Microsoft also maintains Sysinternals, a collection of utilities and technical information for managing, troubleshooting, and diagnosing systems. Its Sysinternals Suite includes tools such as Process Explorer, Process Monitor, and Autoruns; the suite documentation was updated September 10, 2026. These tools extend Windows troubleshooting and administration rather than proving that each built-in interface has been superseded.
So the useful takeaway is not that Windows has stood still. It is that new utilities and modern Settings pages have not made every older, specialized interface unnecessary. Choose the tool that fits the job, and take extra care when that job can change disk contents or system configuration.
