There is no verified account here of one person testing five replacements on a particular Android phone, so it would be misleading to call these five firsthand upgrades. They are alternatives named in a separate guide, and each replaces a different slice of a Google app’s job. Before switching, check whether it covers the features you actually use—and keep app choice, data migration, and disabling a preinstalled app as separate decisions.
Which Google apps can you replace?
A guide updated April 12, 2026, names Proton Mail for Gmail, MEGA for Drive, Samsung Internet for Chrome, HERE WeGo or Mappls for Maps, and Fossify Gallery for Photos. Those are a useful shortlist, not proof that they are universal upgrades or confirmed results from the first-person experience implied by the original headline. TechPP’s Android alternatives guide identifies the apps; it does not establish a winner for every user, region, or device.

The useful question is narrower: does an alternative handle the particular task you rely on, without making another part of your routine harder? Compare migration and account requirements, organization and search, syncing, offline access, local coverage, accessibility, and reliance on Google Play services. The available comparisons do not settle those questions across all five pairs.
Email: Proton Mail instead of Gmail
Consider whether you can move or continue to access the mail you need, whether its search and organization fit your workflow, and how it syncs across your devices. Choosing another email app does not itself move messages or cancel or delete a Google account.

Cloud storage: MEGA instead of Google Drive
Compare the way you store, share, and collaborate on files, plus backup behavior and the applicable storage limits and pricing. Replacing the app on your phone does not transfer files already stored in Drive.
Browser: Samsung Internet instead of Chrome
Check that it is available and supported on your device, and that its syncing and content-blocking options suit you. If the main change you want is search, you may not need to replace the browser: Android Help documents changing Chrome’s search engine.

Navigation: HERE WeGo or Mappls instead of Google Maps
Check coverage where you travel, local business information, transit and traffic features, and offline-map behavior. A map app can be a workable navigation substitute without matching every Maps feature. Google describes Maps as offering real-time navigation and local-business information, illustrating why it is worth comparing the specific functions you use rather than just the app category. First distinguish a local gallery from a cloud photo service. Check whether you need only to browse and manage images on the device, or also rely on cloud backup, searchable organization, sharing, or editing. Google describes Photos as offering searchable organization; installing a different gallery does not move cloud-backed photos or replace a backup setup by itself. Android’s overview outlines Photos’ advertised functions.

How to switch without confusing defaults, data, and app removal
Changing which app you use is not the same as moving your data, disabling the old app, or deleting an account. Make the smallest change that solves the problem, and verify the new app works before altering anything you depend on.
- Install and try the alternative first. Check that it is available for your device and region, then test the essential task—such as navigation, file access, or photo browsing—before changing defaults.
- Change a default only if needed. For search in Chrome, Google’s documented path is to open Chrome’s menu, select Settings, then Search engine, and choose an option. Android Help also covers installing other search, email, and calendar apps; device steps may vary by manufacturer. Google Android Help: Change your default search engine and add or disable apps.
- Move data separately. Use the relevant service’s migration or export process if you want to transfer email, files, or photos. The cited Android Help page does not provide a complete migration procedure for those services; do not assume a new app imports the old app’s data automatically.
- Disable only after checking consequences. Android Help warns: “Disabling a system app can cause other apps to misbehave. It will delete your associated data for that app.” Some preinstalled apps can be disabled, but the option and exact settings path vary by device. Do not disable an app just because you have installed an alternative.
Why the right choice depends on your phone and location
Android phones do not all ship with the same software. Google says Google Mobile Services (GMS) is licensed separately from the Android Open Source Project, and GMS apps can vary by country. That means app availability and behavior can differ by market and device configuration. Google’s GMS overview explains the distinction.

On a work-managed phone, an administrator may set or enforce app defaults and prevent users from changing specified ones. Google’s Android Management API documentation says support depends on Android version and management mode, so a setting available on a personal phone may not be changeable on a managed device. An alternative is an upgrade only for a task it makes better for you. Decide what “better” means before switching: less friction, a needed feature, acceptable syncing, dependable offline use, or a workflow that fits your privacy preferences. Then check what the change costs in convenience or capability. The sources here do not establish that any one of the five alternatives is more private, more secure, or universally better than its Google counterpart.

A poll displayed by Android Authority on September 12, 2026, asked readers which Google app would be hardest to replace. Among its 873 votes, Google Maps received 32%. That is a result from that publication’s poll respondents, not a representative measure of Android users, but it underscores why navigation is a particularly personal choice.
