Each one works, but each has a limit that determines whether it helps in practice. Those limits are set out below, using Google’s Google Messages Help pages as checked in October 2026.
1. Quick actions and editing a recent message
Touching and holding a message in a conversation opens emoji reactions and an action menu. Depending on the message, the menu can include Edit, Reply, Forward, Copy, Star, Delete, Select more, and Info.

How to edit a sent message
- Open the conversation that contains the message you sent.
- Touch and hold the message.
- Choose Edit from the action menu, and change the text.
The most important caveat is timing. Google documents the Edit option as visible only during the 15 minutes after a message is sent. After that window closes, the option is no longer offered, so do not plan on correcting older messages this way.
Reactions are a separate part of the same menu, and their availability is narrower than the action menu. Google’s documentation limits reactions on SMS and MMS to the USA, France, Canada, and Australia, and applies them to text rather than to received media. Photomoji, which builds a reaction from a photo you select, is also documented as a feature you choose rather than something that appears automatically.

2. Starring and pinning important conversations
Starring individual messages
Touch and hold a message and select Star to save it. You can find starred messages later from search or from the Starred view, which makes starring the better tool for a single address, code, or appointment inside a long thread.
Pinning conversations
Pinning works at the conversation level. From mobile, a pinned conversation moves to the top of your message history so it stays in view. Google documents a maximum of 20 pinned conversations. Pinning is also unavailable in India, so readers there should not expect the option to appear.

3. Scheduling a message
Scheduled sending is documented for Android 7.0 and up. It lets you write a message now and send it at a chosen time, which is useful for reminders or messages timed to another person’s day.

- Touch and hold the Send button.
- Pick one of the suggested times, or set your own date and time.
Once scheduled, a message can be updated, sent immediately, or deleted before its time arrives. One practical point: scheduling does not depend on the phone being connected at the exact moment. If the phone has no Wi-Fi or mobile data at the scheduled time, Google says the message sends once the connection returns, so a delayed send is possible rather than a failed one.

4. Filtering the inbox with search
Search in Google Messages can narrow results with filters for unread messages, known and unknown senders, starred items, images, and videos. On phones set up with two SIMs, a SIM 1 and SIM 2 filter also appears, so you can separate traffic from each line. Google states that these filters apply across text, MMS, and RCS messages, which means you do not need to check each message type separately.
The filters are only as useful as the labels behind them. Starring and sender status do the heavy lifting, so starring a message you want to find later makes the starred filter far more useful than an unfiltered search.

5. Using RCS for richer conversations
RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a modern messaging standard that Google Messages uses in place of plain SMS and MMS when both sides support it. With RCS enabled, Google lists high-resolution photo and video sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, messaging over Wi-Fi or mobile data, group-chat controls, and end-to-end encryption between Google Messages users.

These features are not guaranteed in every conversation. The most important condition is that every participant must have RCS enabled before the RCS features are available. Availability also depends on region and carrier, and Google describes RCS support on select iPhone models as well. In a group, one participant without RCS can limit what the whole thread can do.

To check whether RCS is on, look for the RCS chats setting in Google Messages settings. The exact labels and location vary by device and version, so Google’s RCS setup help page is the reliable reference if the switch looks different on your phone.
Choosing the right messaging mode
Google Messages can send text through several routes, and the features above behave differently depending on which one is active. The table compares them on the four points that matter for these features.

Reactions, scheduled sending, starring, pinning, and inbox filters work within the app itself, but their limits are set by the rules above: the 15-minute edit window, the 20-conversation pin cap, the Android 7.0 minimum for scheduling, and the regional limits on reactions.
