For more useful fitness tracker watch readings, wear the device securely but comfortably, choose the activity profile that matches your workout, and treat health metrics as estimates to follow over time—not medical measurements. If heart-rate data looks wrong, check fit, settings, and software before relying on it; for swimming, Garmin recommends a compatible chest strap with store-and-forward functionality for its best heart-rate accuracy.

How to wear your watch for a steadier reading

A watch that shifts around can make consistent sensor contact harder. Garmin recommends wearing its watches about two finger widths above the wrist and cautions that wearing one too tightly may negatively affect optical heart-rate accuracy. Aim for a stable, comfortable fit, and follow the instructions for your exact model rather than treating Garmin’s placement guidance as a rule for every brand or wrist.

If the band is worn, uncomfortable, or cannot hold the watch securely, a model-compatible replacement band may help with fit. A new band is not, by itself, a guaranteed fix for inaccurate readings. Garmin’s wear-and-care guidance explains its recommendations.

What to check when heart-rate data looks wrong

Optical wrist heart-rate sensors use light-based photoplethysmography (PPG). The result can be affected by how the watch is worn and by the activity. Garmin’s troubleshooting suggestions are device guidance, not a promise that every missing or implausible reading can be corrected.

Chest strap for swimming

Garmin recommends a compatible chest-strap heart-rate monitor with store-and-forward functionality for best heart-rate accuracy while swimming. That is a specific manufacturer recommendation, not a requirement for every swimmer or every watch. Check that the strap and watch support the relevant connection and feature before buying; compatibility varies by device. Garmin also describes wrist-based optical heart-rate measurement and compatible strap options in its activity-tracking accuracy disclaimer.

How to interpret watch health metrics

Use activity and health data to notice broad patterns or changes over time. Heart rate, calorie estimates, sleep stages, stress, and recovery scores are not exact clinical measurements, and an individual reading should not be treated as a diagnosis.

Which features matter when choosing a tracker

Start with your routine, phone, and comfort preferences. A tracker only helps if you can wear it consistently and its software presents data you will actually use. TechRadar’s October 2026 guide compares devices across activity type, GPS, data depth, comfort, display, battery life, software, and training features; its model details are source-reported snapshots, so confirm the exact model, region, and current listing before deciding.

Consideration Why it matters
Phone compatibility Check that the watch’s companion features and apps work with your phone.
Activity profile Choose a device and software that support the workouts you actually do.
GPS Built-in GPS is useful for recording outdoor routes and pace without relying on a phone.
Data and training tools Prefer useful, understandable information over a long list of metrics you will not use.
Comfort and display A comfortable fit encourages consistent wear; readable display matters during daily use and exercise.
Battery and software Balance how often you are willing to charge with the features and software support you need.

For concrete examples, TechRadar’s October 2026 guide lists the Garmin Vivoactive 6 with built-in GPS and battery life of up to 11 days, while noting its previous-generation heart-rate sensor and lack of dual-band GPS. The guide presents the Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 as a budget tracker without GPS, and lists the Apple Watch SE 3 as iOS-only with an 18-hour battery claim. These are the guide’s reported specifications and editorial assessments, not independent accuracy rankings or guarantees for every region and usage pattern.
