A reliable fitness event feed should show the event’s actual local date and time, keep the same event recognizable when it changes, and make disagreements between listings visible. That means distinguishing date-only from timed events, representing recurring schedules honestly, recording verified location details, and showing who supplied each claim. No single standard supplies a universal identifier or a rule for deciding which conflicting listing is right.
Give every event an interpretable date and time
Readers need to know when an event takes place in the context where it happens—not merely see a timestamp that a calendar app may interpret differently. For a timed event, publish the local start time and the correct timezone offset. Google Search Central’s Event structured-data guidance illustrates how New York’s offset differs between standard time and daylight-saving time.

Do not invent an hour when the organizer has supplied only a date. Treat an all-day event as date-only as well. Google advises against using midnight UTC or 23:59:59 UTC as artificial boundaries for a local multiday event; for events spanning multiple days, provide both start and end dates, and include times only when known.
- Timed event: State the local date and confirmed time with its appropriate offset.
- Date-only or all-day event: Publish the date without a fabricated start time.
- Multiday event: Give the start and end dates; add start or end times only if they are known.
As an implementation practice, retain the original local date and time, a recognized timezone identifier when available, and the resolved offset for that occurrence. Keep date-only records distinct from timed ones. This is practical storage advice, not a universal format requirement.

Keep an event recognizable when its schedule changes
Google recommends a unique URL for each event page. Its guidance also shows how to preserve event context when the schedule changes: when marking an event cancelled, retain identifying details such as its start date and location; when rescheduling, use previousStartDate for the earlier time and startDate for the new one.
For a feed, the corresponding editorial goal is continuity: a change should not make readers lose the record they already saw. Define a stable internal key and document what it identifies, such as a specific race edition, a class session, or one event occurrence. This is an implementation choice; the cited standards and platform guidance do not establish a universal cross-provider event ID.
Avoid matching or merging records on name, date, or venue alone. Names can recur, venues host many events, and schedules move. If two independent listings cannot be confidently matched, preserve both and flag the uncertain relationship rather than silently combining them.

Choose a record for one occurrence or a recurring schedule
Represent what the organizer actually publishes. If a fitness offering is fundamentally a repeating schedule—such as a weekly gym class—it may be clearer to describe the schedule than to manufacture a list of individual dates. Schema.org’s Event vocabulary documentation for eventSchedule describes associating an Event with a Schedule; in that model, date and time details belong on the Schedule to avoid ambiguity.
By contrast, when sessions are separately defined—for example, separately ticketed performances on different dates—Google recommends a distinct Event for each occurrence. For fitness listings, apply the same distinction carefully: is this one continuing class schedule, or are these individually defined sessions with their own participation or registration? Do not generate future occurrences the source has not established.
Make conflicting claims visible
When listings disagree, show the field in dispute, each publisher’s claim, and when the feed observed it. Identify a publisher as the organizer or official event owner only when that relationship is established; otherwise, label sources neutrally. Keep an unresolved disagreement visible until a source corrects its claim or a documented precedence rule resolves it.

The standards and platform guidance cited here do not prescribe a general ranking algorithm for third-party listings. A feed operator should therefore document its own conflict policy rather than present an unsupported ranking as authoritative. Keep a cancellation or rescheduling update attached to the same event context where possible, so a moved or cancelled event is not mistaken for an unrelated new listing.

Publish location details at the level consumers need
The base iCalendar specification, RFC 5545, provides a LOCATION property as unstructured text. The IETF’s 2021 RFC 9073 explains that a single text value can be inadequate when structured address, region, country, or postal-code data is needed, and describes structured location data for event publishing and geographic indexing.
Include verified details supplied by the organizer, such as venue name, street address, locality, region, country, and postal code where useful. Make clear whether a location is a confirmed venue, an approximate meeting point, a route start, or a virtual or hybrid attendance option. Leave unknown address fields unknown rather than filling them with guesses.

Choose representations based on the reader’s task
| Decision | Use this representation when | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| One-off event or recurring schedule | The source publishes either one dated occurrence or a rule for future occurrences. | Describe the actual publishing unit; do not infer sessions the source has not named. |
| Date-only or timed event | The start hour is confirmed and can be expressed with an accurate timezone, or only the date is known. | Use a time and offset only when established; otherwise keep the record date-only. |
| Location string or structured location | Consumers need only a readable venue label, or need address fields for geographic search and filtering. | Provide structured, verified address components when useful; do not guess missing values. |
| Update existing record or create a new one | A changed schedule still refers to the same event context, or evidence establishes a genuinely separate event. | Preserve continuity for cancellations and rescheduling; do not imply a universal ID rule. |
| Merge listings or show ambiguity | Evidence supports a match, or the relationship between records remains uncertain. | Merge only when justified; otherwise retain both claims and expose the uncertainty. |
Standards and guidance are useful, but not a complete conflict policy
RFC 5545 defines iCalendar as a service-independent format for exchanging calendar and scheduling information. RFC 9073 extends iCalendar for event publishing and richer location data. Schema.org provides vocabulary for events and recurring schedules, while Google Search Central gives platform-specific structured-data recommendations. Google’s recommendations concern its search implementation; they are not universal rules governing every calendar feed.
These sources help publishers express dates, schedule structure, status, and location more clearly. They do not establish a universal identifier shared across providers or a universal method for resolving conflicting third-party claims. Those decisions need a documented feed policy.
