What changed: Fitbit app restores Google Cast for workouts on TV
Google Cast support in the Fitbit app allows workout content to display on a compatible TV while you control playback from your phone. When this feature returns, the practical impact is straightforward: more people can pair guided sessions with a TV screen instead of crowding the workout on a phone display.

Why this matters for workout streaming
Workouts are easier to follow when the on-screen pacing, reps, and instructions are larger and easier to read. Casting also reduces battery drain compared with running everything on your phone for a full session.
Most importantly, Google Cast gives you a predictable control model: your phone acts like the remote, while the TV handles the display.
Prerequisites before you try to cast
Before you start, confirm the basics. Most “it won’t cast” issues come down to version mismatches, network isolation, or the wrong TV input/casting target.
1) Update the Fitbit app
Make sure you’re on a recent Fitbit app build that supports workout casting. On iPhone (iOS) or Android, open your app store and install any pending Fitbit updates.
2) Use a Google Cast target (Chromecast / Google TV / Android TV)
Your TV needs to support Google Cast. Typical targets include Chromecast devices and TVs running Android TV or Google TV with Cast built-in.
3) Confirm your Wi‑Fi setup
Cast generally expects both phone and TV to be on the same network. If your router uses multiple bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), either band can work—just keep both devices on the same one where possible.

If you use a guest network, “client isolation,” or advanced network features, casting may fail to discover the TV.

How to cast a Fitbit workout to your TV (Android and iPhone)
The steps are similar across Android and iPhone, but button labels can differ slightly. Use these as your baseline; if you don’t see the Cast icon, your Fitbit app or the TV target likely isn’t supported in the current setup.
Android (Fitbit app)
On Android, casting is typically driven by the Cast icon inside the Fitbit workout flow.
- Open the Fitbit app on your phone.
- Go to Explore, Coaching, or Workouts and pick a workout you want to start.
- Start the workout.
- Look for the Cast icon (often a rectangle with Wi‑Fi waves) and tap it.
- Select your TV/Chromecast target from the device list.
- Confirm playback begins on the TV, then continue controlling the session from your phone.
iPhone (Fitbit app on iOS)
iPhone casting follows the same logic: start a workout, then choose the Cast target.
- Open the Fitbit app on your iPhone.
- Open Workouts (or the section where the selected workout lives).
- Start the workout.
- Tap the Cast icon when it appears in the workout experience.
- Choose your TV or Chromecast device by name.
- Wait a few seconds for the TV to switch to the Cast feed and start the workout video/instructions.
If you don’t see Cast
If the Cast icon never appears, check these two things first: whether your Fitbit app is fully updated, and whether your phone is discovering your TV on the same Wi‑Fi network.

Which TVs and casting devices work best
Google Cast support depends on the TV’s platform and the casting stack available on that device. In practice, most people get the best results with devices that have current Cast functionality built-in.
| TV / Device | What to expect | Common gotcha |
|---|---|---|
| Chromecast (using Google TV or Chromecast built-in) | Reliable casting for workout playback | TV may need to be on the correct HDMI input if it’s not an integrated platform |
| Android TV | Cast icon and device discovery typically work well | Aggressive power saving modes can pause the TV when idle |
| Google TV | Usually the most consistent experience | Multiple profiles or restricted guest modes can block discovery |
Troubleshooting when casting doesn’t start
If the Fitbit app connects but the TV stays on a blank screen, or if the Cast target never appears, work through the checks below in order. They’re the same root-cause categories that break most Cast flows.
1) Restart the casting chain (fastest fix)
Restart both ends: reboot your phone’s Wi‑Fi and restart the TV/Chromecast device. Then try casting again from the workout screen.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2) Verify both devices are on the same Wi‑Fi network
Confirm the phone and TV are connected to the same SSID. If your router uses separate SSIDs for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, connect both devices to the same band.
3) Turn off VPN and restrictors
A VPN on your phone can interfere with discovery and streaming. Disable it temporarily and test again.
4) Check router isolation features
If your network has client isolation, “AP isolation,” or strict firewall rules, discovery and playback can fail. If you control the router settings, allow local device communication for Cast.

5) Update TV/Chromecast system software
Out-of-date Cast services can break compatibility. On Google TV or Android TV, open system settings and check for updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6) Re-select the TV target
Sometimes the Fitbit app connects to the wrong device name (especially in homes with multiple TVs). Tap Cast again and re-choose the correct target.
7) Try casting a different workout
Some workouts may differ in media type or length. Test with a different session to rule out content-specific problems.
Best practices for smooth playback and fewer disconnects
Casting is usually stable, but workout sessions can stress the connection because video playback needs steady bandwidth. These practices reduce dropouts.
- Use a strong Wi‑Fi signal near your TV. If possible, prefer 5 GHz for bandwidth, as long as both devices remain on the same band.
- Avoid switching networks mid-session. Don’t toggle Airplane Mode or change Wi‑Fi networks while casting.
- Keep battery optimization in check. On Android, temporarily disable battery optimization for Fitbit to test.
- Don’t lock the phone during initial playback. Some systems handle lock-screen casting differently; once stable, you can test whether locking still keeps playback running.
Alternatives if Google Cast still won’t work
If you can’t get Cast working on your current TV environment, you still have options—depending on what you’re trying to achieve (big screen, clean audio, or remote control).
Use wired or built-in TV methods
If your TV supports native playback apps for Fitbit content (availability varies), you may not need Cast. Check for any Fitbit-related media apps on the TV platform you use.

Screen mirroring (only if you accept the tradeoffs)
Screen mirroring can show the workout on the TV, but it may introduce latency and reduce performance. Use it as a fallback, not a first-choice approach for precision workouts.
Keep workouts on the phone while troubleshooting
If casting blocks you mid-routine, switching back to phone playback is the practical route. Use the time to update apps, restart devices, and confirm network settings.
Common mistakes that break casting
- Wrong Cast target: Selecting a different Chromecast device with the same name can lead to silent failures.
- Using a guest network: Guests often get isolation rules that prevent device-to-device discovery.
- Outdated Fitbit app: If the Cast icon is missing, you’re likely not on a build that includes the restored support.
- VPN enabled: Discovery and streaming can fail even if the TV is reachable.
- TV not on the active Cast input: Some TVs require you to keep the Cast session active so the stream renders properly.
FAQs
Why did Fitbit workout casting stop working before?
Most cases come from app updates, changes in media delivery, or compatibility differences between phone OS versions and TV Cast components. When support returns, it usually aligns those pieces again.
Do I need a specific Fitbit subscription to cast workouts?
Workout availability depends on Fitbit’s current content catalog and your account entitlements. If a workout is playable in the Fitbit app on your phone, casting typically follows—assuming the Cast icon appears in the workout experience.
Can I cast to multiple TVs at once?
Google Cast sessions are usually one target at a time. If you have multiple TVs, you can cast to the one you select in the Cast device list, then switch later by re-selecting the target.
Will my workout stats still sync if I cast?
Casting changes the display location, not your sensor tracking. Your workout should still record based on Fitbit’s tracking flow and device syncing used in your setup.
What if casting works for video but audio is delayed?
Audio delay can happen with certain TV audio modes. Try switching TV audio output (for example, from Bluetooth back to TV speakers) and re-run the workout cast session.

With the Fitbit app bringing back Google Cast support for workouts on TV, you can return to a bigger-screen training experience without awkward workarounds. The key is making sure your Fitbit app and your Cast target are current, and that your phone and TV can discover each other on the same Wi‑Fi network.
If casting doesn’t start, follow the troubleshooting sequence—restart devices, verify Wi‑Fi/guest isolation, disable VPN, update TV software, and re-select the correct Cast target. Most users get a working session after those steps.
