Fitbit Air is the better fit if you want a screenless tracker focused on sleep and long wear; Apple Watch suits you better if you want health information alongside a display, apps, and communication features. The available head-to-head tests are limited editorial trials, not clinical validations, so they do not establish that one device is more accurate overall.
What each device tracks
Fitbit Air
Google lists 24/7 heart rate, heart-rhythm monitoring with AFib alerts, blood oxygen (SpO2), resting heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), sleep stages, and sleep duration. Features may vary by availability. Google describes Air as screenless, designed for notification-free wear, and advertises up to a week of battery life; that battery figure is a manufacturer claim, not an independent measurement. Google’s product announcement also says the tracker is not intended for medical purposes and that accuracy can be affected by physiology, device placement, movement, and activity.

Apple Watch
Apple documents sleep schedules, sleep goals and history, heart-rate and irregular-rhythm notifications, overnight vitals, medication logging, and cycle tracking. Which features are available depends on the watch model and, in some cases, region. Apple Watch also adds an on-wrist display and broader smartwatch capabilities, including calls, texts, apps, and Apple Pay on supported configurations. See Apple’s guide to health features on Apple Watch and its Apple Watch overview for the relevant model details.
How the health-tracking evidence compares
The published direct comparisons offer useful examples, but they are too small and methodologically limited to settle accuracy across the product families. They also compare different Apple Watch models, so results should not be treated as a controlled Fitbit Air-versus-Apple Watch benchmark.
#1 Best Overall
- Google Fitbit Air is the unbelievably comfortable, exceptionally smart way to transform your health[1]; and Google Health brings together effortless tracking and adaptive coaching to help make the most of your everyday[2]
- Unlock more with Google Health Premium: With a premium membership, get personalized coaching that’s built with Gemini and adapts to your life[2]; get a 3-month trial at no cost to you[5] (Google Health Premium subscription sold separately)
- Comfortable fit - One Size Tracker (130-210 mm): The lightweight, micro-adjustable fit sits comfortably and quietly, so you can wear Google Fitbit Air through work, play, and sleep; advanced sensors and new algorithms power more accurate, precise health tracking, 24/7[1]
- Designed for every occasion: With no screen to distract you or disrupt your style, your tracker moves seamlessly from bracelet to workout band to sleep band, and you can change looks in seconds – just press the pebble in, click, and go
- Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]
One 10-kilometer run
In a 2026 TechRadar test using Fitbit Air and Apple Watch Ultra 3, the reported average heart rates were 158 bpm and 161 bpm, respectively; calorie estimates were 773 and 750. Recorded distance differed more: Fitbit Air logged 10.43 km, while the Apple Watch logged 10.03 km. The reviewer said a Polar H10 chest strap malfunctioned and supplied no useful reference data. The results describe one run, not clinical accuracy or a general ranking. Read the TechRadar test and its limitations.
One manually counted walk
Tom’s Guide compared Fitbit Air with Apple Watch Series 11 during a walk in which the writer manually counted 5,000 steps. The writer reported that both devices were close to the manual count and Apple was slightly closer, and also raised concerns about Fitbit Air’s elevation data. This was one author’s test; the retrieved page excerpt did not establish a publication date. Read the Tom’s Guide step-count test.
These tests do not show which device is more accurate overall. A meaningful comparison depends on the exact model, activity, metric, software, fit, and phone setup. Stronger conclusions would require independent validation against appropriate reference equipment across more than one activity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSleep, battery, and day-to-day use
Fitbit Air’s screenless design and advertised up-to-a-week battery life may make it more convenient for people who want to wear a tracker overnight and avoid wrist notifications. Apple Watch offers sleep features too, but its display and smartwatch functions are part of the trade-off. The available sources do not provide a like-for-like battery test, so they cannot establish a precise battery-life advantage over Apple Watch.
Rank #2
- Lighter gets mightier with the Google Fitbit Air Special Edition Stephen Curry[1]; including a water resistant coating, it's sweatproof and moisture-wicking for your toughest workouts[2,3]
Comfort and consistency matter for sleep tracking: a device only gathers overnight data when you wear it. Consider how each device feels during sleep and whether its battery routine fits your habits. Google says Fitbit Air sleep tracking is not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions, and should not be relied on for medical purposes. Wearable readings and alerts are not diagnoses; consult a qualified clinician about symptoms or health concerns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compatibility and smartwatch functions
Google says Fitbit Air works with most phones running Android 11 or later or iOS 16.4 or later. It requires a Google Account and the Google Health app. Check the current requirements and feature availability for your phone and region on Google’s Fitbit Air announcement.
Apple Watch is the broader wrist computer: supported configurations can handle calls, texts, apps, Apple Pay, and cellular use. Exact iPhone and watchOS requirements depend on the watch model and software version, so confirm compatibility with Apple before choosing a model. Fitbit Air, by contrast, is controlled through its phone app and has no on-device display.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose Fitbit Air if your priorities are discreet, screenless wear, overnight tracking, and fewer interruptions—and its phone, account, and app requirements work for you.
- Choose Apple Watch if you want health tracking with a display, apps, communication, and Apple ecosystem functions. Compare the specific model because features vary.
- If accuracy is your deciding factor, the available evidence does not establish a product-family winner. For running, pay particular attention to the TechRadar test’s distance difference and its use of phone GPS; do not generalize from one route. Match the exact model and activity you care about, and treat consumer readings as estimates rather than medical measurements.
