1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsI stopped tracking my sleep because the numbers were making me think about sleep more, not helping me rest. Fitbit Air made me reconsider whether I could use sleep data differently—but a new tracker is not a mental-health fix, and its scores are not a diagnosis. Google says the device tracks sleep duration and stages while warning that its sleep features are not intended for medical purposes.
That distinction matters: sleep data can be useful to some people and fuel worry for others. Whether to track is a personal choice, not a test of how seriously you take your health.

Why sleep tracking can become stressful
A sleep score can look like a verdict, especially when you wake up tired and the app labels your night poor. But a consumer wearable estimates sleep from signals such as movement and heart rate; it does not directly observe every moment of sleep or diagnose a sleep disorder. The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine has discussed cases in which pursuing idealized tracker readings was associated with anxiety or perfectionism, alongside limitations in consumer devices’ ability to distinguish sleep stages and wakefulness. Those cases offer context, not evidence that every user will have this experience. Read the discussion of orthosomnia.

A 2024 cross-sectional study in Brain Sciences estimated its prevalence in a general-population sample at 3.0% under conservative criteria, 8.6% under moderate criteria, and 14.0% under lenient criteria. These are estimates produced by different definitions, not one settled rate; the study design also cannot show that trackers caused the concerns. See the study and its criteria.

A 2025 Canadian survey examined sleep wearable use, perceived effects on sleep and stress, and anxiety. Its observational findings help show that people’s experiences can include benefits as well as strain, but they do not establish that wearables cause anxiety. Read the survey study.
What Fitbit Air adds—and what it can’t tell you
Google announced Fitbit Air on May 7, 2026, describing it as a screenless wearable that tracks sleep duration and stages as well as other health metrics. Google’s product page also describes sleep insights, a sleep score, and Smart Wake, which uses alarm settings, movement, and heart rate. These are manufacturer descriptions of features, not proof of clinical effectiveness or a guarantee that the sleep estimates match what happened. Google’s announcement includes this limitation: “Sleep tracking features are not intended to diagnose or treat any medical conditions and should not be relied on for medical purposes.”

How to decide whether tracking is helping you
The useful question is not whether a tracker can produce a score; it is whether seeing that score helps you make a reasonable choice or leaves you more worried. Consider your own response over time rather than treating any single night’s result as a verdict.
- Keep tracking if: the information helps you notice broad patterns or make practical changes without becoming a source of pressure.
- Change how you use it if: scores or alerts prompt repeated checking, make you anxious about bedtime, or outweigh how you feel during the day. You might reduce how often you look at the app or stop treating a score as a target.
- Take a break if: tracking itself is adding to sleep anxiety. World Sleep Society recommendations say affected people may consider a break or discontinuing tracking; this is an option, not a prescription for everyone. Read the recommendations.
If persistent sleep problems or anxiety are affecting your life, a wearable score cannot determine their cause. Consider discussing the symptoms with a qualified health professional rather than using tracker data as a diagnosis.

What changed my mind about trying Fitbit Air
Fitbit Air changed my mind about giving sleep tracking another chance, not about treating a device as an authority on my sleep. Its screenless design and sleep insights made it seem possible to look for useful patterns without making the score the whole point. That is a reason to try a different relationship with tracking—not evidence that the device prevents anxiety or will suit everyone.
