For a first telescope, choose around what you want to observe and how easily you can store, carry, and set it up—not the biggest magnification number on the box. For visual observing, prioritize aperture and a stable, smooth-moving mount. A 6-inch Dobsonian is a sensible class to compare for value, but its size may make a smaller or more portable setup a better fit.
Start with your observing goals and practical constraints
Decide whether you are most interested in the Moon and planets, or in fainter deep-sky objects such as galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. More aperture helps gather the light needed for faint targets; compact instruments with longer focal lengths can suit lunar and planetary viewing. Those are tendencies, not guarantees: sky conditions and atmospheric steadiness also affect what detail you can see. Celestron’s guide offers manufacturer guidance on matching telescope choices to observing goals, rather than independent product testing: how to choose a telescope.

Then picture an ordinary observing session. Where will the telescope live? How far will you carry it, and are there stairs or limited car space? A scope that is straightforward to bring outside and use regularly can be more useful than a larger one that rarely leaves storage. Consider the tube and base together, not only the optical tube.

Understand the specifications that matter
Aperture: the diameter of the lens or mirror
Aperture is the diameter of the telescope’s main lens or mirror, usually listed in millimetres or inches. A larger aperture gathers more light, which can reveal fainter objects and finer detail when conditions allow. Sky & Telescope gives 70 mm as a minimum rule of thumb and says preferably more; The Planetary Society describes a 4- or 5-inch instrument as a possible starting point for beginners focused on Solar System viewing. These are guidance ranges, not promises of what a particular telescope will show. See Sky & Telescope’s first-telescope guidance and The Planetary Society’s beginner guide.

Magnification: a number that depends on the eyepiece
Magnification is calculated by dividing the telescope’s focal length by the eyepiece’s focal length. Changing eyepieces changes magnification, but it cannot create detail the aperture and observing conditions do not support. Be skeptical of a package promoted mainly by an unusually high maximum-magnification figure. Compare the aperture, focal length, supplied eyepieces, finder, and mount as a complete usable setup. Sky & Telescope explains the relationship in its buying guidance.
Choose an optical design and mount as a system
Refractor, reflector, or compound telescope
| Design | How it works | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Refractor | Uses lenses. | Comparatively low maintenance; larger apertures can cost more. |
| Reflector | Uses mirrors. | Generally offers more aperture for a given budget, but may need occasional collimation (optical alignment). |
| Compound | Combines mirrors and lenses. | Compact tube, though it may cost more. |
The right design depends on which trade-offs suit your space, budget, and willingness to make occasional adjustments. Sky & Telescope outlines the main telescope types.

Mounts: steadiness matters more than a long feature list
The mount supports the telescope and determines how it moves. A manual alt-azimuth mount moves up-down and left-right, making it intuitive to use. An equatorial mount tracks the sky around one axis, but requires alignment with Polaris. Computerized GoTo mounts add object-finding convenience, along with setup considerations. Whatever the type, look for a mount that moves smoothly and holds the view steady. A tripod intended for casual photography may vibrate too much; if you can inspect the setup, gently touch the tube and see whether the vibration settles quickly. Sky & Telescope’s buyer’s guide discusses mounts and practical checks.
Is a 6-inch Dobsonian right for a first telescope?
A Dobsonian pairs a Newtonian reflector with a simple manual base. That uncomplicated design can put more of the budget toward aperture, making a 6-inch Dobsonian a worthwhile class to investigate for visual observing. It is not automatically the best choice: the tube and base can be bulky, so check storage space, carrying distance, stairs, and car capacity before deciding. If portability is the limiting factor, choose a setup you can realistically take out and use.

Compare complete packages before buying
When looking at specific options, assess what arrives in the box and how it will work at your observing location. A large aperture on an unstable mount can be frustrating, while a scope without a useful finder or compatible eyepieces may not be ready for the way you plan to observe. Check retailer return terms and local availability directly; they vary by seller and location.
- Confirm the aperture and focal length, not just the advertised magnification.
- Check the mount’s steadiness and whether its movements feel smooth.
- Find out which eyepieces, finder, and other essentials are included.
- Consider the full package’s dimensions, weight, storage needs, and carrying route.
- Review the seller’s current price, stock, warranty, and return conditions before ordering.
There is no reliable current market price established here. The Planetary Society’s guide cited an approximate $200–$400 starting range in a 2020 article, with displayed prices last updated in June 2023. Try observing before committing to a telescope
If you are uncertain about telescope size or type, visit a local astronomy-club event and look through different equipment before buying. NASA Night Sky Network recommends clubs as a way to learn, borrow telescopes, and work out which scope may suit you. NASA educator Vivian White says, “My top recommendation is to give an annual membership to your local astronomy club.” See NASA Night Sky Network’s club guidance.
Binoculars are another way to start learning the sky. NASA advises beginners not to start much above 10×50: higher magnification and larger binoculars are harder to hold steadily by hand. They are not a substitute for every telescope target, but they can help you get comfortable finding your way around the sky before making a larger purchase. NASA’s beginner binocular guidance explains the trade-off.
