Gemini in Android Auto may get a new full-width animation, but the design is only a prototype spotted in app code—not a feature Google has announced or released. Android Authority says it enabled the interface in Android Auto version 17.9.664004; the report gives no release date and warns that the feature may never reach users.
What the possible new Gemini animation looks like
Android Authority describes the current Gemini listening indicator as a subtle glow along the bottom or side of the car display, depending on taskbar placement. In the prototype, the treatment spans the screen width, with dots around the Gemini interface and the close and Gemini Live buttons at opposite ends. The publication attributes the visual style to Google’s Neural Expressive design language. Android Authority’s October 5, 2026 report presents this as a comparison based on its teardown, not as a confirmed update.

Is the animation available, and when might it arrive?
It is not available to users, and Google has not announced a release date. The evidence comes from work-in-progress code in Android Auto v17.9.664004 that Android Authority says it enabled for a first look. APK teardowns can reveal features under development, but those features are not guaranteed to ship.
Google’s May 12, 2026 announcement about Android in the car describes a broader Material 3 Expressive refresh for Android Auto, including expressive fonts, smooth animations and wallpapers. That provides context for the interface’s design direction; it does not confirm this particular Gemini animation.

A separate Personal results setting also appeared in code
The same October report found a prospective setting titled “Personal results in this car.” Its accompanying code string says: “Allow Gemini to respond with info from past chats and Connected Apps like Gmail and Google Calendar”. That wording suggests an option to let Gemini use information from past chats and connected apps when responding in the car, but it is a code-string indication—not a verified public setting or an independently confirmed Google privacy policy.
An earlier Android Authority teardown published September 9, 2026 had found a possible Personalization toggle but said its effect in the car was unclear. Neither report establishes that the setting has been released.

What you can do with Gemini in Android Auto now
Google said on November 20, 2025 that Gemini was beginning to roll out to Android Auto users who had upgraded from Google Assistant to Gemini on their phones. Google’s rollout and usage guidance says to have the Gemini app on the phone and watch for a tooltip on the car display when access becomes available. Once available, drivers can start Gemini by saying “Hey Google,” tapping the on-screen microphone or long-pressing the steering-wheel voice-control button.
