Choose a public place and share the plan
Pick a busy, well-lit place such as a cafe or restaurant, rather than a private home or isolated location for an early date. Tell a trusted friend or family member where you are going, whom you are meeting, and when you expect to return. Agree on a check-in time or a discreet code word or emoji that means you want help. Protect identifying and financial information
Keep your home address, workplace, and daily routine private until you have built trust. If you met through an app, you can keep early conversations there while you decide whether to share other contact details; RAINN notes that an app’s safety and reporting tools may be useful. During the date: stay attentive to comfort and boundaries
- Stay aware of your surroundings and how you feel. Avoid excessive alcohol, and do not leave food or drinks unattended.
- Notice whether your date respects your boundaries. Pressure or behavior that makes you uncomfortable is enough reason to end the meeting.

- Leave when you want to. You do not owe someone more time because they want the date to continue, because leaving feels awkward, or because you want to be polite.
Recognize the specific money-scam warning pattern
An awkward conversation or a canceled plan alone does not establish that someone is a scammer. A more serious warning pattern identified by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is a romantic interest who cannot meet in person or repeatedly cancels, then asks you for money. The FTC’s February 2026 alert describes requests involving wire transfers, gift cards, payment apps, or cryptocurrency. If someone you know only online asks for money or financial details, do not send them. Stop contact and talk with someone you trust. Report suspicious behavior to the dating platform where you met the person; you can also report a suspected scam to the FTC.
