How much storage does a Fire TV Stick have?
It depends on the model. Amazon’s device specifications list multiple capacities, including 8 GB and 16 GB across devices; neither figure describes every Fire TV Stick. Separately, Amazon Customer Service lists 8 GB total and 4.5 GB available for internal storage for certain Stick models. That available figure is model-specific, not a family-wide guarantee. Published capacity and the room currently available for apps are not interchangeable. Use the storage reading on your own Stick as the starting point, rather than treating its advertised total as all free space.
How many sideloaded apps can you install?
There is no reliable universal number. The cited Amazon pages do not give a standard app-size allowance or an app-count limit for sideloading. APKs vary in size, and installed apps may also store data on the device. The count therefore depends on your model’s current free space and the package and data requirements of the apps you want.

Amazon uses “sideloading” to mean installing an app outside the Appstore. Its developer guide documents installing an APK with ADB for development and testing, but does not specify how much storage each sideloaded app will use. Amazon’s Fire TV installation guide includes the command adb install <path-to-apk-file>. An installation method does not change the device’s storage capacity, and sideloading does not guarantee an Android app will be compatible with Fire TV.
How to check your Stick’s available space
- Identify the exact Fire TV Stick model. Amazon’s specifications are organized by device, so use the row for your model rather than a capacity quoted for another Stick.
- Open your device’s settings and look for its storage or available-space reading. Menu labels and paths can vary by Fire OS version; there is no single path established here for every Stick.
- Compare the on-device free-space reading with the APK size and any storage needs stated by the app’s developer. Allow for app data as well as the initial package; the final space used can differ from the APK download size.
Can you add storage to a Fire TV Stick?
Do not assume that a memory card or USB drive will expand every Stick. Amazon lists no external storage for the cited Stick models in its support table. Its developer documentation about the preferExternal installation preference describes an option app developers may use; it is not proof that owners can attach storage to every model. Amazon’s app-compatibility guidance discusses that developer-side setting.

When storage remains a problem
First check the Stick’s actual free-space reading and the needs of the apps you intend to install. If your device repeatedly lacks room, compare its exact model and published capacity with the device you might replace it with. A higher published capacity is not a promise of the same amount of usable space, and it may not solve every app or data issue. Amazon’s specifications establish that capacities vary; they do not establish that upgrading is necessary for every user.
