Firefox YouTube RAM Spikes: What the Fix Does—and What It Doesn’t

Mozilla documented a YouTube menu-rendering loop and a mitigation verified in Firefox 151 candidate testing on Windows 10—but not every YouTube memory spike has the same cause.

Mozilla tracked a specific YouTube problem in which the flexible menu below a video repeatedly changed its controls, triggering further page updates and rendering work. YouTube released a mitigation, and Mozilla verified that the issue no longer reproduced in Firefox 151.0 candidate build 1 on Windows 10. That is evidence of a fix for this reported issue—not proof that every Firefox memory spike involving YouTube is resolved.

What caused the reported YouTube slowdown?

Mozilla’s Bug 2035904 describes a loop involving YouTube’s flexible menu beneath the video. As the menu’s available width changed, it could restore and then remove controls. That repeated change prompted more page updates and rendering work, making paints take longer over time.

This is a page-layout problem, not evidence that Firefox itself was leaking memory in every affected case. The symptoms in the issue and related user reports included high resource use and sluggish or freezing YouTube pages, but the record does not establish that all such symptoms share this cause.

What is the solution, and how strong is the evidence?

A Mozilla Bugzilla comment records that YouTube had released a mitigation so the loop should no longer happen. The issue was resolved and later verified as no longer reproducible in Firefox 151.0 candidate build 1 on Windows 10. The verification is meaningful for the reported bug, but it covers that candidate build and test environment; it does not establish behavior across every Firefox release, operating system, or YouTube page.

Secondary coverage also described complaints involving Brave and Edge, not only Firefox. Those reports are anecdotal, however, and do not show how many people were affected or how common the issue was. A reported figure of more than 7GB refers to individual user reports, not a typical or measured amount of memory use.

What to do if YouTube still uses too much memory in Firefox

If the problem continues, treat it as a troubleshooting case rather than assuming the menu-loop mitigation failed. Mozilla’s Firefox resource-use guidance recommends a general isolation sequence:

  1. Update Firefox. Install the latest version offered for your device, then reopen the YouTube page and check whether the behavior changes.
  2. Test in Troubleshoot Mode. Use Firefox’s Troubleshoot Mode to check whether an extension or theme is contributing. If the problem disappears there, investigate your add-ons and theme rather than attributing it automatically to YouTube’s menu issue.
  3. Check other open tabs. Inspect Firefox’s resource use and close tabs consuming excessive resources, then see whether YouTube remains slow.
  4. Collect diagnostic information if it persists. Mozilla provides diagnostic tools for investigating and reporting resource problems. Its guidance also cautions users to be careful with third-party performance software.

These are general Firefox troubleshooting steps, not a replacement for YouTube’s site-side mitigation. They can help isolate a separate extension, tab, or browser resource problem.

Why older workarounds may not apply

Mozilla’s older Bug 1935456 contains a Firefox 133-era discussion of YouTube lag and user-proposed changes to advanced settings or process behavior. Those suggestions are not the same as the later YouTube mitigation and should not be treated as universally safe fixes. Mozilla also has a separate Bug 2035448 covering a YouTube freezing or memory report in the Firefox 150 period; its existence does not show that it shares the flexible-menu cause documented in Bug 2035904.

Does adding RAM fix the problem?

The documented cause and mitigation are software-side: a YouTube layout/update loop and a site mitigation. The available evidence does not show that buying more RAM, a graphics card, cooling hardware, or a monitoring device fixes this rendering behavior. More system memory can affect a computer’s general capacity, but it is not a demonstrated remedy for this specific issue.
