For browser casting, open the same page in an updated Chrome browser and use its Cast menu. If the website’s video player has its own Cast button, try that first: it can send supported media directly to the receiver without mirroring a Firefox tab.
Can you cast Firefox to Chromecast?
Google’s current computer casting guide provides steps for Chrome and does not give a Firefox workflow. That means the supported browser-based method in Google’s instructions is to open the page in Chrome; it does not establish that casting from Firefox is categorically impossible.

A website’s own Cast button is a separate option. Where available, it can send supported media from the service to the receiver directly, rather than project the contents of a Firefox tab. Google’s instructions for this option are in its Chromecast streaming help.

Google lists Chromecast, Chromecast with Google TV, Chromecast Ultra, Google TV Streamer (4K), and TVs with Google Cast as compatible receiver types for Chrome casting. Its system requirements page lists Chrome casting on Chrome OS, Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux; actual video quality and performance depend on the computer and Wi-Fi connection. See Google’s casting requirements.
Use a website’s Cast button when available
On a supported video or audio site, look in the player for its Cast button and select the receiver. With direct playback, the service sends supported media to the receiver; the computer does not have to keep projecting the browser tab.

Google’s published comparison gives these general capability figures. They are not guarantees for every service, receiver, television, or piece of content; compatible equipment and media are required.
| Feature | Tab projection | Direct playback from a Cast-enabled site |
|---|---|---|
| What reaches the receiver | The browser tab’s contents | Supported media sent by the website’s player |
| Published picture and sound capability | Up to 720p and stereo sound | Up to 1080p and 5.1 audio |
| Computer load | Uses more of the computer’s power | Google says it does not load the computer |
| Can playback continue if the computer is shut down or its lid is closed? | No; the computer must remain on during tab projection | Yes, according to Google |
These are Google’s stated capabilities for the two methods, not measurements of a particular setup. See Google’s Chromecast streaming help.

The content will not play correctly
Some browser plugins do not work when casting Chrome content. Google names Silverlight, QuickTime, and VLC as examples. If the site offers its own Cast button, use it instead of projecting the tab.
Chrome’s menu wording can change between versions. If the labels differ, look for the Cast option in Chrome’s current menu.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is not established about Firefox
The Google guidance cited here explains Chrome casting but does not settle whether current Firefox can discover Chromecast devices, whether Mozilla offers an official add-on, or whether Firefox has a supported native casting path. Check Mozilla’s current documentation for Firefox-specific support; do not treat Google’s Chrome-only instructions as proof that Firefox can never cast.
