For ordinary two-page comparisons, neither browser requires an extension now: Firefox and Chrome both have built-in Split View. Firefox has a direct Alt/Option-click gesture for pairing tabs already open in the same window; Chrome documents more ways to start a split and supports both side-by-side and stacked layouts. Which feels easier depends on how you work—there is no published comparative usability test establishing a universal winner.

| Choose pane orientation | Side-by-side panes, with a resizable divider. | Side-by-side or stacked, with the panes arranged top to bottom. |
| Use controls while comparing | Pane controls include resize, reverse, separate, and close both. | Controls include closing one view, swapping, separating, and changing orientation. Toolbar actions apply to the active view. |
Firefox 149 introduced Split View, and Mozilla says the release first reached Release channel users on March 24, 2026 (Firefox 149.0 Release Notes). Google says Chrome 145 introduced native Split View in February 2026 (Chrome for Developers). Availability can depend on browser version and rollout; update the browser or consult its help page if you do not see the feature.
How to start a split in Firefox
Pair two tabs that are already open
- Keep both tabs in the same Firefox window.
- Hold Alt on Windows or Linux, or Option on Mac, and click the other tab. Alternatively, select the two tabs and choose Open in Split View.
To start from one tab, open its tab context menu and choose Add Split View. In the second pane, enter a web address or choose another open tab. Mozilla’s instructions are in Split View in Firefox.
Adjust or end the comparison
Drag the divider to resize the panes. Firefox also documents controls to reverse the panes, separate them, or close both. Split View can be restored with its window if reopening previous windows and tabs is enabled in Firefox settings; reopening a closed tab by itself does not restore the split.

How to start a split in Chrome
Choose an entry route
Chrome documents several ways to create a split. Right-click a tab to start a new split with the current tab or add it to a new split. You can drag a tab to the left or right edge of the target window for side-by-side panes, or to the bottom edge for a stacked layout. You can also open a link in split view, use a keyboard shortcut, or pin the Split View icon and use its toolbar action. See Google’s current Use split view for multitasking in Chrome help page.
Chrome keyboard shortcuts
- Windows or Linux: Shift+Alt+N
- Mac: Cmd+Option+N
- Chromebook: Ctrl+Alt+N
Chrome’s controls let you close one view, swap panes, separate them, or change orientation. The active pane is visually distinguished. You can scroll the inactive pane without activating it, but tab-specific actions such as Translate, Print, and Reading mode apply to the active view. General side panels stay open as you switch views; tab-specific side panels collapse.

Which is easier for your workflow?
Choose Firefox for quick pairing of open tabs
If both pages are already open as tabs in one window, Firefox’s Alt/Option-click gesture is a particularly direct documented way to pair them. It is a workflow advantage, not evidence that Firefox is universally faster or easier.
Choose Chrome for more ways to begin or a stacked comparison
Chrome offers more documented starting routes, especially if you want to place a link beside the page you are reading. Its help documentation also explicitly supports a top-and-bottom layout, which can suit pages that work better in a tall pane than a narrow one.

Check the pane-specific behavior you rely on
In Firefox, Find in Page searches only the active pane. Firefox supports an unlimited number of separate split views, but each split contains only two tabs, and pinned tabs cannot be added. In Chrome, toolbar and tab-specific actions operate on the active view rather than both pages.

A third-party extension is optional for the basic job of viewing two pages together. It may still suit someone who needs a particular multi-window arrangement or an extension-specific feature. For example, the Chrome Web Store listing for SplitView — Split Screen & Side by Side Tabs for Multi Window Browsing advertises six layouts and shortcuts; those are listing claims, not independently verified capabilities. The listing showed four ratings when accessed on October 4, 2026, too few to establish comparative user satisfaction.

Chrome for Developers says a Split View API for extensions is available starting in Chrome 155, allowing extensions to detect, create, and manage built-in split views (Tabs Split View API, updated September 16, 2026). That is relevant to extension developers or users relying on API-based workflows, not a requirement for ordinary side-by-side browsing.
