On desktop, start by checking that Enhanced Tracking Protection is set to Standard; consider Strict only if you accept that some sites may break. HTTPS-Only Mode and secure DNS address different risks, while Multi-Account Containers are optional tools for separating browsing contexts—not anonymity switches.
Check Enhanced Tracking Protection first
Firefox’s Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection is enabled by default. Mozilla says it blocks social media trackers, cross-site tracking cookies, fingerprinters, and cryptominers; in Standard mode, tracking content is blocked only in Private Windows. Standard also includes Total Cookie Protection, which separates cookies by site. Mozilla’s desktop guide to Enhanced Tracking Protection explains the modes and settings.

To review the setting in desktop Firefox, open Menu → Settings → Privacy & Security and find Enhanced Tracking Protection. Menu wording or placement can vary by release. Standard is a sensible starting point for most people; you do not need to enable an obscure option to get Firefox’s baseline tracker blocking.

When Strict is worth trying
Strict blocks all cross-site cookies and tracking content in all windows, in addition to the categories blocked under Standard. That broader coverage can interfere with logins, embedded content, or other site features. Mozilla cautions that some websites may not work correctly with stronger restrictions.

If a site breaks, use the shield icon beside the address bar to turn protection off for that site alone and test the feature. Avoid switching off protections globally as a first fix. Restore the site’s protection after the task if practical. Mozilla’s Total Cookie Protection and website breakage FAQ describes site-specific exceptions and the effects of changing cookie protection.
Keep Total Cookie Protection on
Total Cookie Protection partitions cookies by site, limiting the ability of one site to use cookies stored in another site’s context. Mozilla’s support page, last updated June 24, 2026, says: “Total Cookie Protection is enabled by default in Firefox to all users worldwide.” If a particular website fails, prefer a site-specific exception over disabling protections for every site.
Cookie controls are only one part of privacy: blocking third-party cookies alone does not prevent all tracking. Fingerprinting and other techniques can still matter, which is why Firefox’s broader tracking protections are relevant. See Mozilla’s explanation of third-party cookies and tracking protection.

Enable HTTPS-Only Mode for connection security
HTTPS-Only Mode tells Firefox to use HTTPS—the encrypted version of HTTP—whenever it is available. In desktop Firefox, look under Menu → Settings → Privacy & Security for HTTPS-Only Mode; the exact control may differ by release. Mozilla’s privacy and security feature overview describes the feature.
HTTPS protects data traveling between your browser and a site from being read or changed in transit. It does not stop the site you visit from collecting information you provide or observe through that connection, and it does not replace tracker blocking or cookie partitioning.
Choose DNS over HTTPS based on your network
DNS over HTTPS (DoH) encrypts DNS lookups between Firefox and the resolver it uses. The resolver still handles those lookups, so choose a provider you understand and trust. DoH is a distinct layer from HTTPS-Only Mode: one concerns DNS queries, the other the connection to a website.

Firefox’s protection levels trade off fallback behavior and reliability. Default can fall back to regular DNS or be disabled in some circumstances, including networks, VPNs, parental controls, or enterprise policies that signal secure DNS should not be used. Increased and Custom protection continue using the selected provider, with a backup option if there are problems. Max protection warns if the resolver cannot be reached or returns no address, rather than silently providing the same fallback experience. The available labels and behavior may vary by release. Consult Mozilla’s guide to DoH protection levels before changing the level.

Multi-Account Containers keep cookies separated between containers. That can be useful for maintaining distinct contexts—for example, keeping work and personal accounts logged in separately. Mozilla lists containers among its privacy and security help topics.

Containers are optional, not a replacement for Enhanced Tracking Protection. They separate browsing contexts you choose; they do not make you anonymous or stop every form of tracking. Feature availability and setup details can depend on platform and Firefox version.
What these settings do—and do not do
- Enhanced Tracking Protection: blocks specified tracking categories, with broader blocking in Strict; it is not a guarantee that all tracking stops.
- Total Cookie Protection: isolates cookies by site; it is not a complete defense against techniques such as fingerprinting.
- DNS over HTTPS: encrypts DNS lookups to the chosen resolver; the resolver and network conditions still matter.
- HTTPS-Only Mode: protects the connection in transit when HTTPS is available; it does not control what the destination site collects.
- Containers: separate cookies across contexts you create; they are useful for account separation, not a universal privacy shield.
These settings reduce particular exposures, but none makes browsing anonymous or guarantees that every tracker is blocked. The best practical approach is to keep Firefox’s baseline protections on, use stricter settings when their trade-offs suit your browsing, and scope exceptions to the site that needs them.
