Choose what Firefox does with PDFs

Open the action menu beside it and select Open in Firefox. Close Settings; Firefox saves the change.

Mozilla identifies Open in Firefox as the action for displaying a PDF in Firefox’s built-in viewer. Mozilla Support explains the PDF viewer and its settings.
What the PDF actions mean
| Action | What happens |
|---|---|
| Open in Firefox | Displays the PDF in Firefox’s built-in viewer. |
| Always ask | Prompts you to open the file in Firefox, open it with another PDF application, or save it. Opened PDFs are also saved to Downloads. |
| Save File | Saves the PDF to Firefox’s selected download folder. |
| Use the system default application | Opens the PDF in the application configured by your operating system, when this option is available. Opened PDFs are also saved to Downloads. |
These choices apply to the PDF file type. Firefox’s general Ask whether to open or save files setting applies to files with no defined content type, so changing it is not the same as setting the PDF action. Mozilla also cautions against choosing Firefox itself as a helper application to always open a file type, which can lead to repeated empty tabs or windows. If Firefox still downloads or asks about a PDF
Check the PDF action and test another link
Confirm that Portable Document Format (PDF) is set to Open in Firefox. If the setting is correct but one site still downloads a file or behaves differently, try a known PDF link. A site’s handling of an individual link can affect whether Firefox treats it as browser content or as a download; an incorrectly set MIME type is also an exception to the built-in viewer’s handling of web PDFs. The behavior of a particular link depends on how it is served.

Use another viewer for a document that renders incorrectly
If a PDF is blank or has problems with fonts, colors, or the document as a whole, Mozilla recommends clicking the download button in Firefox’s PDF viewer and opening the saved file with the computer’s default PDF application. Mozilla Support lists steps for troubleshooting PDF display problems.

Check extensions if no PDFs open in Firefox
If PDFs consistently fail to open in the built-in viewer, an extension could be responsible. Mozilla recommends disabling extensions to check whether one is interfering.
