Firefox does not provide a built-in button to export cookies as a portable CSV or JSON file. For a Firefox profile backup, preserve the profile data that includes cookies.sqlite. For a file another tool can import, use a suitable Firefox cookie-export extension and check its format and permissions before installing it.
Choose the right kind of cookie export
“Export” can mean two different things. Copying Firefox’s cookie database is useful for backing up or transferring profile data; it does not turn cookies into a portable interchange file. A JSON or Netscape-format cookies.txt file is a separate export, usually created with an extension.

- To preserve Firefox profile data: back up the profile according to Mozilla’s instructions. Mozilla identifies
cookies.sqliteas the profile file that stores cookies. Mozilla’s profile file reference explains the file’s role. - To use cookies in another tool: check that tool’s required format, then choose an extension that supports it and, ideally, limits export to the needed site or domain.
Firefox stores cookies together in a file inside the profile folder, rather than as one separate file per website. Mozilla’s cookie overview explains how cookies are stored and used.

Back up Firefox cookies with the profile
- In Firefox, open the menu and choose Help > More Troubleshooting Information.
- On the Troubleshooting Information page, find Profile Folder and select Open Folder (the button wording can vary by operating system).
- Use Mozilla’s profile-backup guidance to copy the profile data to a safe location. The cookie database is named
cookies.sqlite. - When restoring or moving profile data, follow Mozilla’s instructions for the destination profile rather than assuming that the database alone is a portable cookie file.
Mozilla’s documentation identifies the cookie database, but does not promise that copying it alone will work as a cross-browser export or convert it to CSV. If your goal is to preserve Firefox data, use the profile backup method; if you need an interchange format, use an exporter that explicitly supports the destination’s format.

Create a portable cookie file with an extension
- Identify the destination’s required format, such as JSON or Netscape
cookies.txt, and whether it needs cookies for one host, a whole domain, or all sites. - Open the extension’s listing on Mozilla Add-ons. Review its current Firefox compatibility, update history, supported formats, privacy information, reviews, and requested permissions before installing it.
- Check whether the extension can limit the export to the required site or domain. If it supports that choice, export only what you need.
- Save the file in a protected location and import it only into the intended destination. Delete it when the transfer or task is complete.
Extensions that access cookies need the WebExtensions cookies permission and host permissions for the sites whose cookies they read. Some exporters request access to data across all websites, which is broader than a single-site task requires. Mozilla documents these permission requirements in its WebExtensions cookies API reference.
Examples of formats and trade-offs
Mozilla Add-ons listings describe different export options. Listing details change, so check the live page before installing; counts and reviews are not security audits.

For all three, recheck the live listing rather than treating the figures above as a current endorsement. A large user count or positive reviews indicate neither independent security review nor safe handling of exported sessions.

Protect the exported file
Cookies can keep you signed in, remember preferences, and identify a browser session. A cookie export may therefore let someone access an account without knowing its password. Mozilla notes that cookies can also contain information a user supplied to a site. Mozilla’s profile file reference and cookie overview describe these uses.

- Export only the sites and data you need.
- Do not post cookie files, email them casually, upload them to an untrusted service, or paste session values into a public support thread.
- Keep the file somewhere access-controlled, and remove it once it is no longer needed.
- If you use an encrypted export, confirm that the destination can read that format and understand how the extension handles the encryption; a developer’s claim is not an independent audit.
Do not confuse cookies with saved passwords
Firefox’s built-in CSV export is for saved usernames and passwords in Password Manager, not cookies. Mozilla warns that the resulting password CSV can be read by anyone who can view the file. Use that feature only when you intend to export saved logins; it will not create a cookie file. See Mozilla’s login-data export instructions.
