A Firebase Authentication failure is not automatically a Firebase service bug. The fastest way to narrow it down is to capture the exact error and identify where the sign-in flow breaks—before redirect, at the provider, on return, or after a reload. Firebase documents several distinct causes, including an unauthorized domain, an invalid API key, a disabled provider, a network failure, browser storage restrictions, and Auth persistence settings. Without the original error, environment, and code, there is no reliable basis to claim which one caused a particular three-day debugging session.
Start with the exact error and where the flow breaks
Before changing configuration, record the full error code and message. Also note the browser, app platform, sign-in method, deployed hostname, Firebase project, and the stage at which the failure occurs: before redirect, at the identity provider, on return to the app, or only after a refresh. Firebase’s Authentication error reference distinguishes categories such as auth/unauthorized-domain, auth/invalid-api-key, auth/operation-not-allowed, and auth/network-request-failed. Those errors point to different checks; changing OAuth settings will not fix every network or provider error.

Why does Firebase say the domain is not authorized?
For the documented redirect-domain error, Firebase says the likely causes are that the redirect domain is missing from Firebase Authentication’s authorized domains or that the API key used by Authentication is invalid. The Firebase Authentication FAQ and troubleshooting guide also recommends checking that the API key has not been deleted and that the app’s authDomain and project configuration match the deployed app.

- In the Firebase console, open Authentication and review the authorized domains. Confirm the hostname serving the app is listed; do not assume a local development hostname covers a deployed hostname.
- Check that the app is using the intended Firebase project’s configuration and a valid API key. Confirm the
authDomainis appropriate for the Hosting site and that the project ID agrees with the deployed project. - If the provider is Google, compare the OAuth client ID and secret configured for Firebase with the web client shown in Google Cloud Console. Firebase identifies a mismatch as another item to check for this redirect error.
Why does Google sign-in work locally but fail in production?
Local and deployed apps can use different hostnames, Firebase projects, API keys, or OAuth clients. Compare those values and the exact error rather than treating “works locally” as proof that the production setup is correct. Firebase also notes an important change for newer projects: projects created after April 28, 2025 no longer include localhost as an authorized domain by default. Add a development hostname only where it is needed for development; Firebase says Google strongly discourages using localhost in production. See the Firebase FAQ for the current domain guidance.

Could browser storage restrictions break redirect sign-in?
Yes. Firebase documents that its JavaScript SDK uses a cross-origin iframe connected to the Firebase Hosting domain during redirect sign-in. A browser that restricts third-party storage can therefore affect the redirect flow, even when the project settings appear correct. Firebase’s redirect best practices describe using a custom authDomain or proxying auth requests as possible approaches.
Using a custom auth domain
The custom-domain approach uses the domain serving the app as authDomain. It also requires the identity provider’s authorized redirect URI to include https://<domain>/__/auth/handler, and the continue URI must be authorized. Follow the Firebase guide for the provider-specific setup; changing only the app’s authDomain is not the complete configuration.

Proxying authentication requests
Firebase also documents proxying authentication requests to the Firebase Hosting domain. Whether a custom domain or proxy is appropriate depends on the app’s hosting and browser behavior. First establish that the issue is tied to redirect handling or third-party storage; these changes are not a general remedy for invalid credentials, disabled providers, or every Auth error.
Why does the user disappear after a redirect or page refresh?
A user who appears signed out after navigation may indicate an Auth state or persistence issue rather than a failed credential exchange. Firebase’s web Auth state persistence guide describes three persistence types:

- Local: The browser default where supported. State can persist across browser restarts and synchronize across tabs.
- Session: State lasts for the current tab or window session and is cleared when that session ends.
- In memory: State is cleared on refresh and is not persisted beyond the current page context.
Use Firebase’s user-state observer pattern to distinguish initialization and restoration from a failed sign-in attempt. The Auth listener can run after initialization when a prior user is restored or when a redirect flow returns. Check the configured persistence and the observer’s state before concluding that the provider sign-in failed.

- Capture evidence: Save the exact code and message, browser, platform, sign-in method, hostname, Firebase project, and failure stage.
- Follow the error category: For
auth/unauthorized-domain, inspect authorized domains and the project’s redirect configuration. Forauth/invalid-api-key, verify the deployed key and project configuration. Forauth/operation-not-allowed, check whether the sign-in provider is enabled. Forauth/network-request-failed, investigate network conditions rather than assuming an OAuth mismatch. - Compare local and production: Check hostnames, Firebase project IDs, API keys,
authDomain, and Google web OAuth client credentials. Treat localhost as a development origin, not a production fix. - Isolate browser behavior: If the failure is specific to redirect sign-in in browsers that restrict third-party storage, consult Firebase’s redirect best practices for the custom-domain or proxy setup.
- Check restored state: If the flow appears to complete but the user is absent after reload or behaves differently across tabs, inspect persistence and observe Auth state through the listener.
This process narrows the responsible layer; it does not establish what caused a particular author’s reported three-day debugging session. That conclusion requires the actual error, relevant configuration with secrets removed, environment, and final change.
