Yes. An Angular web app can send Gemini requests through Firebase AI Logic’s web SDK and Firebase-managed proxy, without an application-operated backend handling every request. You still need to configure Firebase, choose a model provider, and protect the client-facing integration—especially with App Check. The documented web SDK is the Firebase JavaScript SDK, imported from firebase/ai; Firebase does not provide a separate Angular-only AI Logic SDK.
How Firebase AI Logic fits into an Angular app
The request starts in your Angular application and goes through Firebase AI Logic’s proxy to the selected Gemini API provider. This avoids building and operating a custom server just to broker each model call, but it does not make the model private or remove the need for security and usage controls. Firebase describes the client SDK, proxy, provider choices, and supported capabilities in its Firebase AI Logic overview.

Angular CLI can bundle npm-installed modules, so the Firebase JavaScript SDK can be used in an Angular project. The official web setup is framework-independent: wrap its JavaScript calls in an Angular service or another application layer that suits your app. That service structure is an implementation choice, not a Firebase-prescribed Angular API. See Firebase’s JavaScript project setup.

Set up the web SDK
- Create or select a Firebase project. In the Firebase console, open AI Services > AI Logic and enable a Gemini API provider. Firebase recommends Gemini Developer API as a quick-start option. Agent Platform Gemini API, formerly Vertex AI, is another option with its own billing requirements. Follow the web getting-started guide for the current console workflow.
- Configure App Check. Treat App Check as part of setup for a client-originated model request, not as an optional replacement for authorization. For web apps, Firebase lists reCAPTCHA Enterprise as an App Check provider. Its documented setup began automatically enforcing App Check in early July 2026; its production checklist says enforcement will be required starting November 2, 2026. Console behavior and timing can change, so verify the current workflow when you configure or publish.
- Install the Firebase JavaScript SDK. From your Angular project, run
npm install firebase. The current AI Logic module isfirebase/ai, not the olderfirebase/vertexaiimport used in some examples. - Initialize Firebase and call a model from your application layer. The official JavaScript pattern is to initialize your Firebase app, create an AI instance for the provider you enabled, create a model instance, and call
generateContent. For example, with the Gemini Developer API backend:
import { initializeApp } from "firebase/app";
import { getAI, getGenerativeModel, GoogleAIBackend } from "firebase/ai";
const firebaseApp = initializeApp(firebaseConfig);
const ai = getAI(firebaseApp, { backend: new GoogleAIBackend() });
const model = getGenerativeModel(ai, { model: "YOUR_SUPPORTED_MODEL_NAME" });
const result = await model.generateContent("Explain this Angular error message.");
const text = result.response.text();
This illustrates the documented JavaScript API shape; use a supported model name and the backend corresponding to your enabled provider. In an Angular app, put request logic in an injectable service if that fits your architecture, and have components call that service. Firebase renamed and repackaged Vertex AI in Firebase as Firebase AI Logic in May 2025; current web examples use firebase/ai. The official quickstart covers current initialization and provider setup.

Protect a client-side integration
A browser application cannot keep code or configuration delivered to it secret. Firebase AI Logic routes requests through its proxy, where App Check verification can be performed before a request continues to the selected provider. App Check helps establish that a request comes from an authentic app or untampered device; it is an abuse-prevention layer, not a substitute for business authorization or server-side validation. For local development, configure the App Check debug provider rather than weakening production verification. See Firebase’s App Check guidance.
- Restrict Firebase API keys to the web app using HTTP referrer restrictions, and limit allowed APIs to those the app needs. Firebase API keys identify a project or app; they are not authorization credentials.
- On Blaze projects, monitor usage and set budget alerts or spend caps. Model requests can create costs even though Firebase AI Logic itself is free of charge.
- Firebase’s current production checklist states a default per-user limit of 100 requests per minute (RPM), configurable by the developer. Check the current production checklist before relying on that limit.
- Use stable model versions in production rather than preview, experimental, or
-latestaliases. Model availability and capabilities can change; consult Firebase’s supported models list.
Prompts, system instructions, and configuration shipped to a browser can be inspected by users. If they must be protected from extraction, Firebase recommends keeping them in server prompt templates; Remote Config or server prompt templates can also help change model or prompt configuration without releasing a new app version. Review the security checklist and production checklist for the relevant options.
Choose the provider and understand billing
Firebase AI Logic is free of charge, but Gemini usage is not automatically free. Billing requirements and model costs depend on provider, model, and enabled features. Gemini Developer API costs vary by model and features; some models, especially preview and image-generation models, may require billing. Agent Platform Gemini API requires billing setup, and pricing is largely model- and feature-based. Check Firebase’s pricing guidance before choosing a provider or estimating spend.

Depending on the model, Firebase AI Logic supports text and multimodal input such as images, PDFs, video, and audio. The SDK also supports chat, structured output, image generation, text-to-speech, function calling, and grounding with Google Search or Google Maps. Do not assume every model supports every input type or feature; check Firebase’s model list and feature documentation.
Client-side calls are a reasonable fit when Firebase-managed proxying and App Check provide the controls your feature needs. Add Cloud Functions or another backend when the app requires trusted secrets, custom authorization or business rules, substantial server-only orchestration, or strict control over model inputs and outputs. Firebase describes Cloud Functions for custom workflows; the choice is about your trust and control requirements, not a requirement to proxy every request.

There is also an optional web hybrid-inference path for on-device and cloud-hosted models. Firebase documents on-device inference for web on Chrome on Desktop, with cloud fallback when an on-device model is unavailable. This is separate from the ordinary client-to-cloud setup described above; see hybrid inference for web apps.
