You can make a Fire TV home screen easier to navigate by moving frequently used apps forward, uninstalling apps you no longer use, removing individual recently watched items where the option appears, and using separate profiles when household members’ viewing activity is mixed together. The exact controls depend on your Fire TV model and interface, and Amazon does not let you remove every featured category.
Why Fire TV cleanup steps differ by device
Amazon says the Fire TV experience differs across some devices, and its home-screen customization guidance notes that options vary by device. The New Fire TV Experience is listed for select newer models, including Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Generation), Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Generation), and specified 2024 and 2025 Amazon Ember and Fire TV television series. Category availability can also vary by country and device.

Use the labels displayed on your television if they do not match the steps below. Amazon says app customization is unavailable on Fire TV (1st Generation), Fire TV (2nd Generation), and Fire TV Stick (1st Generation); those older devices also do not support profiles.

Reordering apps makes the shortcuts you actually use easier to reach. On supported devices with the older interface, highlight an app, press the remote’s Menu button, choose Move or Reorder, and move the app to the preferred position.

On devices with the New Fire TV Experience, Amazon’s instructions say to hold Select on the app rather than pressing Menu, then choose the available reordering option. The redesigned experience announced by Amazon in 2026 increases the number of apps that can be pinned to the home screen from six to 20; that change is specific to the redesigned experience, not a promise for every Fire TV.
2. Uninstall apps nobody in the household uses
Removing unused apps reduces the number of shortcuts competing for space. On the New Fire TV Experience, hold Select on an app to open its options, then choose the uninstall option if it appears. This gesture and menu are not established as universal across Fire TV models, so follow the choices shown on your own device.

Uninstalling an app is different from canceling a subscription: removing the app from the device does not by itself establish that a paid service subscription has ended. Manage any subscription separately through the account or provider that bills you.

3. Remove individual items from Recent
If a recently watched item is cluttering the relevant row and your interface offers the control, highlight that item, press Menu, and select Remove from Recent. This removes an individual item from Recent; it is not a control for clearing every recommendation or promotional row.

Amazon’s support guidance explicitly says, “You can’t remove items from featured categories.” You can therefore tidy some visible history without expecting to hide all featured categories from the home screen.
4. Use profiles to separate household viewing
When different people’s activity is blending together, profiles can personalize selected features such as watchlists, viewing history, recommendations, and watch progress. Create or select a profile using the profile controls available on your device, then have each household member use their own profile. The exact menu path may differ by model and software version.

Profiles do not make every account item private or separate. Amazon says app subscriptions, rentals, and purchased content are shared across profiles on the account. A device can have up to six profiles, including up to four Amazon Kids profiles.
What these changes can—and cannot—clean up
- App order: Reordering changes the position of app shortcuts; availability depends on the device and interface.
- Installed apps: Uninstalling removes an app from the device where that option is available.
- Recent items: The documented control removes an individual item when it appears, not an entire category.
- Viewing personalization: Profiles separate selected viewing features, while some account purchases and subscriptions remain shared.
- Featured categories: Amazon says these cannot be removed using the documented home-screen controls.
Amazon reported in its 2026 announcement that average search time in the United States was 12 minutes, compared with 10.5 minutes in 2023, attributing those figures to Gracenote. That is context for the redesign, not a measurement of how much time any particular cleanup method saves.
