FinderBack puts Back and Forward actions in Finder’s right-click menu, so you can navigate without moving the pointer to the toolbar. It is a small macOS utility aimed at people who frequently navigate folders and prefer context-menu controls; it is not a general Finder replacement or a mouse-button remapper.
What FinderBack adds to Finder
FinderBack attaches a navigation bar to the context menu when you right-click empty space in a Finder window. The controls provide Back and Forward navigation. The project announcement describes the goal as avoiding a trip back to Finder’s toolbar for those actions. Rich’s September 17, 2026 announcement and the FinderBack repository document the feature.

The navigation bar can show stacked Back and Forward labels or compact arrow buttons. FinderBack also has a menu-bar settings item for optionally opening the app at login.

The README says FinderBack uses a listen-only mouse and keyboard event tap, reads accessibility roles and the Finder context menu’s position and size, then sends Finder the Back and Forward shortcuts: ⌘[ and ⌘]. This is the maintainer’s description of the implementation, not an independent technical inspection.
#1 Best Overall
- WIRELESS, RECHARGEABLE CONVENIENCE — Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad connects wirelessly to your Mac, iPad, or iPhone via Bluetooth. And the rechargeable internal battery means no loose batteries to replace.
- WORKS WITH MAC, IPAD, OR IPHONE — It pairs quickly with your device so you can get to work right away.
- ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE — Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience. Its extended layout features document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys. The numeric keypad is ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING — The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a Lightning to USB Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB port on your Mac.
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS — Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.
Compatibility and first launch
The repository documents the packaged download for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 26 or later. It says the app was tested on Apple Silicon with macOS 26 and does not support Intel Macs. Accessibility permission is required.
FinderBack is not Developer ID-signed or notarized. The README says macOS normally requires approval on first launch:

- Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It’s also wireless and rechargeable, with an incredibly long-lasting internal battery that’ll power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
- It pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- It features a USB-C port and includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
- Download the packaged app from the official FinderBack repository.
- Open it. If macOS blocks launch, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway and approve it.
- Grant FinderBack Accessibility permission when macOS requests it. The app needs that permission for its documented interaction with Finder.
- In Finder, right-click empty space in a window to access the Back and Forward controls. Use the menu-bar settings if you want FinderBack to open at login.
Download the app or build from source
The project lists a $9.99 USD one-time purchase for a ready-to-run digital download, which it says includes installation instructions and the license. It also makes its source code available under the MIT license, with a build script for readers who prefer to compile it themselves. The stated source-build target is Apple Silicon and macOS 26; rebuilding may require granting Accessibility permission again. Check the repository and its checkout for current price and availability.

- The attached navigation bar is always dark.
- Its row height does not scale with the system large-text setting.
These are project disclosures, not results of independent compatibility testing.
What the project says about privacy
The FinderBack README says the app does not read filenames, paths, or files; makes no network requests; and has no analytics or crash reporting. It says preferences are saved locally. These are maintainer statements, not an independent security audit.

Is FinderBack right for you?
FinderBack is most relevant if you want Back and Forward directly in Finder’s context menu and use a compatible Apple Silicon Mac. It may be a poor fit if you need Intel support, rely on multiple monitors without uncertainty, or require large-text scaling for the added controls.
For a different interaction, SideNav is a separate open-source utility that remaps mouse side buttons to Back and Forward shortcuts. Its README says it requires macOS 13 or later, Accessibility permission, and mouse buttons that register as HID 3 and 4. It addresses physical side-button navigation rather than adding a Finder context-menu control, so it is not a direct substitute for FinderBack.
