First, check whether Windows 10 is activated
Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation. Windows 10 can activate with either a product key or a digital license. Microsoft defines a product key as a 25-character code; a digital license activates Windows without requiring you to enter a key.

Seeing that Windows is activated does not necessarily mean a recoverable product key is stored for you to view. Follow the route that matches how Windows was obtained.

These locations follow Microsoft’s product-key and activation guidance. A digital license is an activation entitlement, not a 25-character code you can retrieve from the places where retail keys are supplied.

Reinstall Windows 10 when you have a digital license
If the device has a digital license, you generally do not need to find a key before reinstalling Windows. Install the same Windows 10 edition that was licensed on the device.
- Start Windows Setup for the edition that matches the device’s existing license.
- If Setup asks for a product key, choose the option to skip entering one.
- After installation, connect the PC to the internet and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the license.
Microsoft’s reinstallation guidance describes these steps for a digital-license reinstall. Choosing a different edition can prevent activation even when the device has a valid entitlement.

If a product key does not work
A key can fail for reasons other than a typing mistake. Check the licensing and installation situation before searching for another code:

- Edition mismatch: the installed Windows edition may not match the edition the key or license covers.
- Different edition after repair: a repair may have installed another edition or used a different key.
- Previously used key: a pre-owned PC may have a key that has already been used beyond its license terms.
- Hardware change: a significant change can affect activation and may require Microsoft’s activation troubleshooting steps.
- Genuine-software concern: counterfeit or otherwise non-genuine software can create activation problems that locating a key will not fix.
Use Microsoft’s activation troubleshooting guidance for the specific error shown in Activation settings. If Windows was acquired with a digital license, troubleshoot that entitlement rather than assuming a missing key is the problem.

What not to mistake for key recovery
Windows installation media can help reinstall Windows, but it does not find or recover a product key. Likewise, a key listed by an unverified seller is not proof that it is valid for your Windows edition or licensed for your use. Start with the original purchase records, device documentation, or the licensing portal that applies to your copy.
