Under Product Information, check the product name and version. Select About Excel for the full version and build details and to see whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit. On a Mac, open Word and choose Word > About Word to see the version number and license type.
Check your Office version on Windows
- Open Word, Excel, or another Office app.
- Select Account. If it is not shown, select File, then Account or Help.
- Look under Product Information for the product name and version details. Depending on the installation, these can include the version, build number, and installation type. See Microsoft’s Office version instructions.
- Select About Excel to view the complete version details and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
The Account screen is also where Microsoft directs Windows users to check for Office updates. If Update Options is missing and only About appears, Microsoft says the installation may use a volume license or update controls may be managed by your organization. That clue concerns update management; it does not by itself identify your Office edition. See Microsoft’s Windows update instructions.

Check your Office version on a Mac
- Open Word.
- From the menu bar, choose Word.
- Select About Word.
- Read the version number and license type in the dialog.
Microsoft’s support page includes an example showing version 16.18 and a one-time-purchase Office 2019 for Mac license. That is an illustration in the instructions, not a description of what is currently installed on your Mac. See Microsoft’s Office version instructions. Microsoft’s Office 2024 FAQ also points Mac users to the app name in the menu bar and About.
What the product name, version, and bitness tell you
These are separate details, and one cannot safely stand in for the others:

- The Microsoft Office 365 Bible: The Most Updated and Complete Guide to Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, Teams, Access, and Publisher from Beginners to Advanced
- ABIS BOOK
- Product name and license family: This tells you the named product, such as Microsoft 365 or a one-time-purchase Office edition. Microsoft describes Microsoft 365 as a subscription service and Office 2024 as a one-time purchase. Check the product or license information in the app rather than inferring the license from an icon or document. See Microsoft’s Office 2024 FAQ.
- Version and build: These identify the installed software release details. On Windows, the Account screen may show version and build information under Product Information.
- Bitness: This identifies whether a Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit. Find it in the About Excel dialog; it is not the same as the product name or license.
If Account or update controls are missing
If you cannot find Account directly in the app, select File and look for Account or Help. If the app is managed by your workplace and update settings are unavailable, your organization may control those settings; ask its IT administrator if you need to know how updates are handled.

Microsoft’s support notices describe two separate platform issues. Neither changes the steps for identifying your Office installation.

- 32-bit Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows Arm: Microsoft says new feature updates stopped in October 2025 and security updates will end in December 2026 for this specific configuration. The notice says the 64-bit edition on Windows Arm requires Windows 11. These dates do not apply to every Office installation. See Microsoft’s Windows Arm support notice.
- Older macOS or iOS devices: Microsoft says that starting July 13, 2026, some users on older operating systems or devices may be able to open and print files but not edit, save, or create them. Its recommended sequence is to update the operating system first, then the Office apps. This is a platform-support issue, not a way to identify your Office version. See Microsoft’s macOS and iOS update guidance.
