Find Your Browser Extension: Where to Look and What to Check

A missing extension icon may be hidden, disabled, or unavailable as a toolbar button. Find the correct menu and restore access in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari.

Where is my extension icon? On a computer, it is usually beside the address bar or inside the browser’s Extensions menu. If it is missing, check that the extension is installed and enabled, then pin it to the toolbar if your browser offers that option. Safari on iPhone uses a different workflow: open Safari’s Page Menu and tap Manage Extensions.

Find the icon or extension menu

Browser and device Where to look How to restore access
Chrome on a computer Toolbar beside the address bar, or the Extensions puzzle-piece menu Open Extensions, find the extension, and choose Pin if offered; otherwise inspect it in More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Google Chrome Help
Firefox on a computer Toolbar, or the jigsaw-puzzle Extensions button Open the panel’s gear or three-dot menu beside the add-on and choose Pin to Toolbar if available. Check the Add-ons Manager if it is missing. Mozilla Support
Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 or Windows 11 To the right of the address bar, or Settings and more > Extensions Open Manage extensions to inspect whether it is installed or enabled. Microsoft Support
Safari on Mac Safari toolbar; extension settings are under Safari > Settings > Extensions Confirm the extension is installed and enabled in settings. Apple Support
Safari on iPhone Safari’s Page Menu Tap Page Menu > Manage Extensions. For global settings, use Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions. Apple Support

Chrome on a computer: pin a hidden icon

  1. Select the Extensions puzzle-piece control near the address bar.
  2. Find the extension in the menu. If Pin is offered, select it to show the icon on the toolbar.
  3. If it is not listed, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions and check whether it is installed and enabled.

Some extensions do not offer a toolbar pin. Chrome may also disable extensions it considers unsupported, and a work or school administrator may control which extensions are available. Google’s instructions for managing extensions describe the hidden-icon and pinning workflow.

Firefox on a computer: use the Extensions panel

  1. Select the jigsaw-puzzle Extensions button in the toolbar.
  2. For an add-on in the panel, open its gear or three-dot menu and choose Pin to Toolbar when that option appears.
  3. If the add-on is not shown, check the Add-ons Manager and confirm it is enabled.

Firefox does not make every add-on pinnable. Mozilla also notes that pinned and disabled extensions do not appear in the panel. Some extensions have no browser-action button, so selecting their panel entry may not open anything. Mozilla Support explains the Extensions button.

Microsoft Edge: distinguish toolbar removal from uninstalling

  1. Look to the right of the address bar for Extensions. If it is not there, open Settings and more > Extensions.
  2. Select Manage extensions to check the extension and switch it off or on.
  3. If you previously removed an icon from the toolbar, check the Extensions list; removing the toolbar icon is not the same as removing or disabling the extension.

Microsoft’s support instructions apply to Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Menu details may differ on other platforms or in different releases. See Microsoft’s Edge extension-management steps.

Safari on Mac: check the extension setting

  1. In Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Extensions.
  2. Check whether the extension is listed and enabled. Some extensions are delivered with apps.
  3. If it has a toolbar button, select it to open its features or manage its access to websites.

Apple advises reviewing installed extensions and understanding what they do because extensions can access webpage content. If an extension checkbox cannot be selected, Apple says a macOS security feature may be preventing an app or service from simulating a click. Install the latest Apple software updates. If the problem persists, Apple’s documented steps are to start the Mac in Safe Mode, enable the extension, and restart; this is a specific troubleshooting path, not a universal fix for every missing icon. Apple’s Safari extension guidance covers settings and its blocked-checkbox steps.

Safari on iPhone: manage extensions from the Page Menu

  1. Open Safari and tap the Page Menu.
  2. Tap Manage Extensions.
  3. To change the broader setting, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions and turn on Allow Extension.

If you use Safari profiles, enable the extension for each profile where you want it available. The iPhone workflow is separate from desktop toolbar pinning. Apple’s iPhone guide describes managing Safari extensions.

Why an extension icon may be missing

  • It is hidden: Open the browser’s Extensions menu and pin it if that option exists.
  • It is disabled: Check the extension manager or browser settings and enable it if appropriate.
  • It is not installed in this browser: An extension installed in one browser or profile does not necessarily appear in another.
  • It cannot be pinned or has no toolbar button: Some extensions offer neither a pin control nor a clickable browser-action icon.
  • A setting or policy affects availability: Check the active profile, private-browsing settings, or work/school device policy. These are possibilities to investigate, not explanations that apply to every missing icon.

A quick troubleshooting order

  1. Identify the browser and device; desktop and mobile controls are different.
  2. Open that browser’s Extensions menu or manager.
  3. Confirm the extension is installed in the current browser and enabled.
  4. If toolbar pinning is offered, use it to restore the icon.
  5. If it is still absent, check whether the extension has a toolbar button, whether profile or private-browsing settings affect it, and whether a device administrator controls availability.
  6. For Safari on Mac, check Safari > Settings > Extensions and Apple’s blocked-checkbox guidance. For Safari on iPhone, use Page Menu > Manage Extensions.
