To find an app making sound, check the audio controls while the sound is happening: use Volume mixer on Windows, and on a Mac check Now Playing or the menu-bar privacy indicator. On iPhone, iPad, and Android, song-recognition features can name music, but they do not reliably identify which app produced an arbitrary sound.
Windows: check the Volume mixer while the sound is playing
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Check the system volume and look for the app that might be producing the sound. Its slider or mute control can help you test whether it is the source. Microsoft documents this route and the app-level controls in its Windows sound guidance.

In Windows 10, right-click the taskbar volume icon and select Open Volume mixer. If you see a plausible app, mute it briefly and listen. Restore its setting if the sound continues. A mixer entry may not have an obvious name, and Windows does not guarantee that every app or audio session will be clearly identified.
If one app is silent but other sounds work
That is a different problem from finding an unexpected sound. In Volume mixer, check the app’s volume and its selected output device. App-specific settings, audio services, or drivers can also affect whether one app plays sound. Microsoft outlines these checks in its Windows audio troubleshooting guide.

Mac: distinguish media controls from the audio privacy indicator
Click Control Center in the menu bar. Now Playing lets you control media from an app, such as pausing or skipping playback. The Sound control changes overall volume and the output device; it is not a per-app volume mixer. Apple describes these controls in its Control Center guide.
If you need to know which app is accessing system audio, look for the menu-bar privacy indicator. Apple says it can show which app is currently using the microphone, camera, or system audio. Treat it as a clue about current access, not a complete list of apps capable of making notification or alert sounds.

iPhone and iPad: use media controls for playback, recognition for music
Use the device’s media controls to manage ongoing playback. If the sound is a song and you want its title, add Recognize Music to Control Center and tap it. Apple says an identified song appears in a notification and can be reviewed in history; Shazam can also identify music playing in another app. These features identify a track, not the app that produced an arbitrary alert or other sound. Android: music recognition is not app-source tracing
On a Pixel phone, Now Playing can identify nearby music. Google documents the feature and a separate Now Playing app; the app may take up to 24 hours after installation to become available. Apple’s Shazam guide also supports song identification on Android. Neither feature is a general detector for which app produced a notification, alert, or other sound. Android menus and audio controls vary by manufacturer and version, and there is no single universal source-identification path established here. If the exact control differs on your phone, consult its manufacturer’s current sound or media instructions.

A practical way to isolate an unexplained sound
- Classify the sound. Decide whether it is continuous media, a short alert, or a call or communications sound. Media controls are more likely to reveal ongoing playback than a brief notification.
- Open the platform’s audio or media control while the sound is active. On Windows, use Volume mixer; on a Mac, check Now Playing and the privacy indicator. On mobile, use media controls if playback is ongoing.
- Test one likely app at a time. Pause or mute it briefly using its own controls or the Windows mixer. If the sound stops, check that app’s settings for background playback, notification sounds, or autoplay. If it does not stop, restore the setting and test another possibility.
- If no source is apparent, narrow it down gradually. Close recently used media apps or browser tabs one at a time, checking after each change. This is a practical isolation method, not a guaranteed operating-system diagnostic.
- If the issue is missing or misrouted sound, troubleshoot output instead. On Windows, verify the app’s volume and selected output device, then follow the platform’s audio troubleshooting steps.
- If you want the name of a song, use music recognition. Shazam or Pixel Now Playing may identify recognizable music, but they do not establish which app played it.
