On a Google Pixel, Now Playing can identify music nearby automatically and show the song on your lock screen. On other Android phones, Google’s Song Search lets you identify music manually, including by humming, whistling, or singing. The automatic feature is Pixel-specific; you do not need a Pixel to search for a song on Android.

What happens to audio when Pixel Now Playing listens?
Google says Pixel uses an on-device music library to recognize nearby music. If that library does not identify a track, a manual lock-screen search can send a short digital audio fingerprint to Google for cloud matching or additional song details. Google states that raw audio and background conversations are not sent, and that fingerprints are used to recognize music, not stored on Google’s server or shared with other Google or third-party services.
If you choose to share usage and diagnostics, Google says that information can include counts such as the percentage of times Now Playing recognized music correctly. Its help page does not publish a recognition percentage.
