To search messages in Slack on iOS, tap the Search bar at the top of the screen, enter a word, phrase, or query with search modifiers, then tap Search or the magnifying-glass option in the suggestions. In the results, choose a result type or use More filters to narrow what you see. Slack’s current iOS instructions use the top search bar; older directions that point to a bottom-tab Search button may no longer match the documented workflow.
Search Slack messages on iPhone
- Open Slack and tap the Search bar at the top of the screen.
- Type a word or phrase you remember. Put quotation marks around an exact phrase, such as
"launch plan". - Optionally add search modifiers to specify a channel, sender, or date. For example,
"launch plan" in:#project-launch from:@Morgan after:2026-09-01looks for that exact phrase in the named channel, from the named person, after the specified date. - Tap Search or the magnifying-glass icon in the suggestions.
- In the results, switch result types or tap More filters and use the available sorting or filter controls.
Slack documents these steps for its iOS app. Search results can include Messages, Canvases, Files, Channels, People, and Workflows.

Use search modifiers to find an older message
Modifiers can be combined, so you can narrow a broad keyword search without trying every possible phrase. Replace the example names, channel, and dates with the ones relevant to your workspace.

Refine results by type or filter
If the search returns too much, select a result type—such as Messages or Files—or use More filters. The available controls depend on the type of result; Slack describes mobile sorting menus and filters on its search help page.
You can search for files in Slack’s mobile app, but Slack says the file browser itself is unavailable in mobile apps. Search for a file by a name or term you remember rather than looking for a desktop-style file browser. Slack’s file help covers the distinction.

When Slack AI search may help
If your workspace has the feature, you can try a natural-language question instead of building a query from keywords and modifiers. Slack says mobile search may show AI answers with citations that open the source messages or files, and natural-language queries can trigger automatic filtering.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Availability depends on your plan and workspace configuration. Slack’s AI features guide lists automatic search filters for Pro, Business+, and Enterprise+, and search answers for Business+ and Enterprise+, with legacy-plan and add-on exceptions. Check the guide and your workspace’s current feature availability rather than assuming a plan name alone guarantees access. If an AI answer appears, open its citations to inspect the underlying message or file.

If the search controls look different
Slack’s current iOS help describes the Search bar at the top of the screen. A historical update records Search in the bottom tab bar in app version 21.02.10, but that older placement is not the current location described in the help instructions. Slack’s separate search-preferences page concerns the desktop app or browser, not persistent iOS preferences; the mobile instructions describe filters for an individual search. See Slack’s search-preferences help and its update log.
For ordinary message searches, you do not need an API token or developer setup. Slack’s search.messages API reference is for developers; it notes that searches using user tokens can be affected by Slack UI search filters.
