To find a file you opened recently in Windows 11, open File Explorer and select Home in the left pane. For a document opened in Word, Excel, or another Office app, check that app’s separate File > Open > Recent list.
See recent files in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer by selecting its folder icon on the taskbar, or find it from Start.
- Select Home in the left navigation pane.
Home can show recent files and favorited Office.com files. It also provides search across files on your PC and cloud accounts. To enable cloud-account search, sign in to those accounts under Settings > Accounts, as described in Microsoft’s File Explorer guide.

If recent files are missing from Home
- In File Explorer, select See more > Options.
- Under Privacy, turn on the recent-files option, then select Apply.
The frequent-folders option is separate: you can turn it off while keeping recent files enabled. If both recent files and frequent folders are off, Quick access shows pinned folders. Windows labels can change with updates, so the wording or placement may differ slightly.

Remove an entry without deleting the file
Right-click a recent entry, or long-press it on a touch device, and select Remove from Quick access. This removes the entry from the list; it does not delete the file. To open the file later, search for it in File Explorer or browse to its folder. See Microsoft’s instructions for File Explorer and Quick access.

Find a document in an Office app’s Recent list
File Explorer Home and Office history are separate lists with different controls. In Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or another supported Office app, select File > Open to view recent documents. The Office list can include files associated with your account, rather than only files surfaced in File Explorer.
Remove or clear recent entries
- To remove one link, right-click its entry and select Remove from list.
- To clear unpinned entries, use Clear unpinned Documents.
- To change how many documents appear, go to File > Options > Advanced and adjust Show this number of Recent Documents. Setting the number to zero hides the list.
These controls are documented in Microsoft’s guidance on customizing Office recent files.

Why an Office entry may be unexpected or broken
Microsoft says Office recent lists may synchronize with a Microsoft Account. An older device coming online can bring older entries into the list, and files opened by another person signed in to the same account can appear too. If a file has been moved, its recent entry may point to the old location and no longer open. Browse to the file through File > Open if the link is stale. These are Office-list behaviors; they should not be assumed to apply to every File Explorer entry. See Microsoft’s explanation of recent Office files.

Windows Activity History is a separate device-history feature, not the basic way to reopen a recent document. Its controls are at Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history, where you can stop storing activity or clear it. Changing Activity History does not replace the File Explorer recent-files setting. Microsoft’s pages on Activity History and privacy and Timeline describe the distinction; its current Timeline help points Windows 11 users toward recent files, OneDrive, or app-specific history.
