Find me/follow me is a business phone-system feature that routes a call for one person to multiple devices or phone numbers. Depending on the system’s settings, those destinations can ring all at once, in a chosen order, or in a combination; an unanswered call may then go to voicemail or another configured destination.
How find me/follow me routing works
A caller dials a person’s number or extension. The phone system then tries that person’s configured destinations. In SIP systems, devices can register to a user’s address-of-record, allowing calls to be routed to the user’s registered devices. The IETF describes simultaneous, sequential and combined routing patterns in RFC 4596.

- Simultaneous: several destinations ring at the same time.
- Sequential: the system tries one destination, then another if the first is not answered.
- Mixed: the system can try destinations in stages—for example, one phone first, then two others together.
For example, a system might ring a desk phone before trying a mobile phone, then send an unanswered call to voicemail. That is an illustrative setup, not a behavior guaranteed by every provider. Sangoma’s PBX GUI documentation describes configurable destinations and ring times, along with an optional confirmation step for external numbers.

Do “find me” and “follow me” mean different things?
There is no universal distinction. CallFire describes “find me” as forwarding to a list of numbers and “follow me” as schedule-based forwarding in its glossary. By contrast, RFC 4596 uses the combined term for routing calls across multiple devices. Phone-system providers may use either label or bundle both behaviors under “find me/follow me,” so check what a particular system actually does.

What to check before choosing a phone system
Feature names alone do not tell you how a system will handle calls. Check the settings and limits that matter for your use:
- Can calls ring destinations simultaneously, in sequence, or in a mix?
- Can you send calls to internal extensions, registered SIP devices, external numbers, or some combination?
- Can routing follow a schedule or time-of-day rules?
- How long does each destination ring, and what happens if nobody answers?
- Does answering on one device stop the other devices from ringing? Can an active call be moved between devices?
- Is the feature included in the specific service package, and do external calls incur charges or limits?
These controls differ by system. Avaya’s telephone features guide describes external destinations and call transfer in the system it covers. Zayo’s voice-features glossary lists availability with specified UCaaS packages; availability should not be assumed for every product or plan.

How it differs from a hunt group
Find me/follow me routing is for reaching one person across that person’s devices or numbers. A hunt group routes calls among a group of people. They solve different call-routing needs, even if a provider offers both.
