For a one-off lookup, search the official Estonian e-Business Register by company name, registry code or VAT number (commonly called KMKR). For automated lookups, the Register’s company-requisites service accepts a name or registry code and can return the company’s name, code, VAT number, status and address. API and XML access require an agreement and authenticated credentials.

The portal’s detailed search also offers filters such as legal form, status, related person, address and activity area. The portal’s single-query box is the simplest route when you already have a company name, code or VAT number.

How to find a company in the portal
- Open the official e-Business Register.
- Enter the company name, registry code or VAT number in the single-query field.
- Review the matching entity’s record. If a name returns several candidates, use the registry code or narrow the search with the detailed-search filters.
To find a company’s KMKR number, search for it by name or registry code and check the VAT number shown in its record. If you only have a VAT number, use that number as the portal’s search key.
Which API query returns the information you need?
Company requisites: name, code, VAT number and address
Use arireg.ettevotjaRekvisiidid_v1 for a compact identity lookup. The documented inputs are nimi (business name) and/or ariregistri_kood (registry code); the documented outputs include company name, registry code, VAT number, status and address. Simple status and basic data
arireg.lihtandmed_v2 is intended for a basic overview. It can return legal form, former names, registry code, status, registry area, equity, address and initial registration date. A name search is limited to 100 results. Consult the simple-data query reference for the documented query details.
Detailed data with selectable groups
For broader results, the detailed company-data query lets you request particular groups rather than treating every data field as automatically available. Its groups include general data, personnel data, commercial pledges, applications in proceedings, rulings and registry cards. The documented default maximum company-result count is 10, and the query supports Estonian or English classifier language selection. See the detailed-data query reference.

What API access requires—and its stated limits
The Registers and Information Systems Centre says in its API introduction that using its open-data API or XML services requires an agreement with the Centre. You also need an authenticated register username and password. The official guidance says API-only use is free; that does not mean every service or document in the Register is free.
The service guidance accessed on 7 October 2026 states these operational terms. The page does not give original publication dates for the limits, so treat them as current guidance to verify before implementation:

The documentation identifies production and test WSDL/service addresses and describes the XML data as real-time. These are legacy-style XML/SOAP services, not evidence of a modern REST interface. Check the current official documentation for endpoint details and terms before building against them.

Use the downloadable files when you need a bulk starting dataset or want to analyze many companies, rather than repeatedly looking up individual records. The official guidance says most files are updated daily and defines their scope as public information on legal entities currently registered with entered, liquidation or bankruptcy status. That scope is not the same as an unrestricted archive of every entity or every record.

The open-data guidance says personal identification number information was removed from files from 1 November 2024. For API queries, the detailed service’s selectable groups mean you should request only the data your use case needs; do not assume that every person-related field is universally returned. Choose by lookup key and freshness
- You have a VAT number: use it in the portal’s single query. The documented requisites API instead specifies business name and/or registry code as inputs.
- You have a company name: use the portal for a manual search, or the requisites/simple-data query for programmatic retrieval. A name can match multiple entities, so confirm the registry code.
- You have a registry code: use it for a precise portal lookup or as an API input to the requisites and basic-data queries.
- You need broader fields: use the detailed query and select the relevant data groups.
- You need bulk coverage: use open-data files, bearing in mind their stated status scope and generally daily update cadence.
- You need automated current retrieval: the official service introduction describes XML data as real-time, but API use requires a contract and credentials and is subject to the stated concurrency and answer limits.
