In Windows 11, open Control Panel > System and Security > Security and Maintenance > Automatic Maintenance. To get there, search for “Control Panel” from Start, open it, and follow that category path. The page’s presentation can vary by Control Panel view or Windows release, but Automatic Maintenance is the destination documented by Microsoft Learn.
What Automatic Maintenance does—and why a task may not run at the displayed time
Automatic Maintenance is the Windows maintenance framework associated with scheduled maintenance work. Microsoft Learn describes its Task Scheduler maintenance tasks as opportunistic: they run when the machine is idle and on AC power. That means a displayed time should not be read as a guarantee that work begins at that exact minute; the idle and power conditions matter too.

Microsoft describes Automatic Management as enhancements to the Task Scheduler API that let applications link into the Windows maintenance schedule. That relationship does not mean every maintenance job is collected in one user-facing Task Scheduler folder. Avoid changing individual scheduled tasks unless you have a specific task to manage and know its purpose.

| What you want to do | Where to go | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Find Automatic Maintenance settings | Control Panel > System and Security > Security and Maintenance > Automatic Maintenance | The Automatic Maintenance page |
| Run maintenance diagnostics | Control Panel > Troubleshooting > View all > System Maintenance | The separate System Maintenance troubleshooter, not Automatic Maintenance settings |
| Change update-related restart timing | Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours | Windows Update restart timing; Windows can adjust active hours automatically or let you set them manually |
| Troubleshoot Windows Update | Start with the automated troubleshooter in Get Help; alternatively, Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update | Windows Update problems |
| Change a Microsoft Defender scheduled scan | Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Windows Defender > Windows Defender Scheduled Scan; open its Triggers tab | That specific scan task, not the full set of Automatic Maintenance work |
Microsoft documents the System Maintenance troubleshooter path in its Control Panel troubleshooting guidance. For update restart timing, see Microsoft’s active-hours instructions; for Windows Update diagnostics, see the Windows Update troubleshooter guidance. Microsoft’s instructions for an individual Defender scan are in Help protect my device with Windows Security.

If your concern is when Windows updates restart
Use Active hours for restart timing rather than treating it as an Automatic Maintenance control. Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 article says updates released on and after July 28, 2026 are being combined for a single monthly restart on Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, with a gradual rollout. In that described experience, driver, .NET, and firmware updates wait for the monthly security update, while some security intelligence, emergency, and expedited updates can install sooner. Availability depends on version and rollout, so check the Windows Update page on your own device rather than assuming this schedule applies to every PC. See Microsoft’s update restart announcement.
