To audit Microsoft Defender exclusions in Windows 11, open Windows Security and review Virus & threat protection > Manage settings > Exclusions. Remove only entries you can identify as unnecessary; on a work- or school-managed PC, also check the policy that manages Defender. Removing an exclusion restores scanning coverage for its target, but does not remove malware that may already be on the device.
Find exclusions in Windows Security
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection > Manage settings.
- Scroll to Exclusions, then select Add or remove exclusions.
- Review the listed entries. To remove one, select it and choose Remove.
Microsoft documents this route for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Pages or features may be unavailable when an organization manages the device. Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance warns that excluded files are no longer checked by Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which can leave the device and its data vulnerable.

Understand what each exclusion covers
Windows Security supports four antivirus exclusion types. They reduce scanning coverage for the matched target, so confirm an entry’s owner and purpose before changing it.
| Type | What it excludes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| File | A specific file. | Confirm the full location and whether the file is still required. |
| Folder | A folder and its contents. | Check what else is stored in the folder; a broad folder exception can cover more than one application file. |
| File type | Files matching the specified extension. | Consider how widely that extension is used; an extension exclusion can affect matching files in many locations. |
| Process | Files opened by the specified process are skipped by real-time scanning. | Use the process’s full path to distinguish it from another executable with the same name. The process executable itself is excluded with a path exclusion, not merely by the process exclusion. |
Microsoft notes that files covered by a process exclusion may still be scanned by scheduled or on-demand scans unless a file or folder exclusion also covers them. The scope described for ordinary Windows Security exclusions is not a substitute for checking the policy and configuration method in use on a managed device. See Microsoft’s exclusion configuration reference and Windows Security guidance.

List exclusions with elevated PowerShell
PowerShell is useful when you want a compact inventory of the local antivirus preference view. Open PowerShell as an administrator and run:
$p = Get-MpPreference
'ExclusionExtension','ExclusionPath','ExclusionProcess' | ForEach-Object {
$t = $_
$p.$t | ForEach-Object { [pscustomobject]@{Type=$t; Value=$_} }
} | Format-Table -AutoSize
The output labels each value as an extension, path, or process exclusion. Treat this as a view of local Defender preferences, not proof that a managed device has no additional or overriding policy. Microsoft documents Get-MpPreference and exclusion configuration in its Defender Antivirus exclusion reference.

Check whether a particular path is excluded
To check a file or folder’s effective exclusion status, run an elevated command prompt or PowerShell session and use Microsoft Defender’s command-line utility:
MpCmdRun.exe -CheckExclusion -Path "C:PathToFileOrFolder"
Replace the example path with the target you want to check. Microsoft says this check is supported in Defender Antivirus version 4.18.2111-5.0 (December 2021) and later. It reports exclusion status for that path; it does not establish that the PC is malware-free. See Microsoft’s documentation for checking exclusions.

Remove one identified exclusion with PowerShell
Use the removal cmdlet that matches the exclusion’s type. Run PowerShell as an administrator and substitute the exact value you identified:
Remove-MpPreference -ExclusionPath 'C:ExampleSuspiciousFolder'
Remove-MpPreference -ExclusionExtension '.example'
Remove-MpPreference -ExclusionProcess 'C:ExampleSuspiciousApp.exe'
Run only the command or commands that match entries you intend to remove. Microsoft documents Remove-MpPreference as removing specified values; attempting to remove a value that is not in the list reports an error. Add-MpPreference adds values without affecting existing ones, while Set-MpPreference replaces existing exclusions of the specified type with the values supplied. Avoid using Set-MpPreference for casual single-entry cleanup because it can replace other exclusions of that type. Details: Remove-MpPreference and Microsoft’s exclusion configuration reference.

Check policy-managed exclusions separately
On a work- or school-managed PC, the Windows Security screen may not show the whole configuration. Microsoft describes the app as useful for configuring or testing a single device and recommends enterprise management methods for many devices. Changes made in the Windows Security app do not appear in Group Policy exclusions, while Group Policy exclusion changes appear in the app. Intune and other management tools have their own policy views.

- If you do not recognize an entry, ask your IT administrator what deployed it and whether it is required before removing it.
- Review the applicable Group Policy, Intune, or other management configuration as well as the local list.
- If an exclusion returns after you remove it, a management policy may be applying it again; confirm the effective policy with the administrator.
Microsoft’s guidance on configuring Defender exclusions explains the distinction between the Windows Security app and enterprise management.

Include Attack Surface Reduction exceptions in a broader audit
Attack Surface Reduction (ASR) exceptions are separate from the antivirus path, extension, and process exclusions shown in the inventory command above. For a broader Defender review, inspect the ASR-only list in elevated PowerShell:
(Get-MpPreference).AttackSurfaceReductionOnlyExclusions
Review the policy that configures those exceptions, too. Microsoft documents this separate setting in its ASR rules and exclusions guidance; do not assume the ordinary antivirus exclusions list includes it.
Scan after removing an exclusion if compromise is suspected
Restoring scanning coverage does not clean a file, undo persistence, or show whether malware used the excluded target. If you suspect an infection, update Microsoft Defender security intelligence and run a full scan from Windows Security. Microsoft also offers Microsoft Defender Offline: it restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans without loading Windows, which can make it harder for persistent malware to hide or defend itself. Check Protection history for scan results. See Microsoft’s instructions for protecting your PC from unwanted software and Windows Security scan options.
