Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If you want to see what is on your local network and keep track of which device is which, LAN Orangutan is a close fit: it uses nmap to discover devices, then lets you save labels, groups, and notes that carry across scans. It offers a web dashboard and command-line interface without expanding into a full security-monitoring suite. The assignment’s headline does not name a product, so LAN Orangutan is best treated as a well-supported example, not a confirmed identification.
What LAN Orangutan does
LAN Orangutan scans networks using nmap and gives you a persistent inventory of what it finds. You can label devices, group them, and add notes, so a later scan is easier to interpret than a list of unfamiliar IP addresses. The project provides a live web interface as well as a CLI, including JSON output and CSV export. The official repository describes its features and deployment options.

The project’s stated philosophy is: “LAN Orangutan isn’t trying to be the most powerful scanner out there, and that’s the point.” That trade-off is useful to keep in mind: it is aimed at discovery and keeping track of devices, not at replacing a broader security-monitoring system.
How setup works
The project describes LAN Orangutan as a cross-platform, single-binary application with no application dependencies. Nmap is a separate prerequisite: install it, download and run the application, then open its local dashboard. The project site documents this basic flow. Raspberry Pi is shown as one possible host, but no particular model is required; a compatible Linux, macOS, or Windows computer can also serve.
#1 Best Overall
- Multi-Function Network Cable Tester: Supports RJ45 (CAT5, CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6A, CAT7) and RJ11 telephone cables. Quickly detects continuity, short circuits, open wires, miswiring, and cable shielding status, ensuring your LAN or phone lines are correctly wired and ready to use.
- Fast/Slow Mode with LED Indicators: Switch between fast and slow scan speeds to identify wiring issues more precisely. LED lights on both master and remote units show wire order, making it easy to spot errors like open pairs or misaligned pins at a glance.
- Split-Type Design for Long-Distance Testing: Master and remote units can be detached and used separately, allowing you to test both ends of a long cable run, ideal for wall-mounted ports, long runs, or structured cabling. Perfect for home, office, or professional IT setups.
- Compact, Lightweight & Durable: Ergonomically designed with sturdy ABS housing, this pocket-sized tester is ideal for on-the-go network engineers, DIYers, and electricians. It’s your go-to toolkit for cable maintenance, upgrades, or new installations.
- Safe & Easy to Use: Simple one-button operation makes testing quick and hassle-free. LED indicators clearly show wiring status, while the G light instantly identifies shielded (FTP/STP) or unshielded (UTP) cables. Supports safe testing of telephone lines with typical voltages under 48-72V, ideal for both home and professional use.
That small setup is not the same as zero configuration. You still need to install nmap and choose where the scanner can see the networks you want to inspect. If you want an always-on inventory, the host must remain available to run scans.
What to check before scanning
Multiple networks and Tailscale
LAN Orangutan supports scanning multiple networks and discovering Tailscale peers. The Tailscale integration requires the host’s Tailscale CLI. The project notes that its standard Docker setup cannot see a Tailscale installation on the host, so do not assume a container can use that integration without changing the deployment.

- UPGRADED SECURITY & FIRMWARE SUPPORT: New LK301E comes with an updated firmware version, with security improvements optimized through firmware enhancements to ensure stable and secure operation for office use.
- LAN USB DEVICE SHARING: Easily share up to 3 USB 3.0 devices over your Local Area Network via a stable wired Ethernet connection. With the Xiiaozet Virtual USB Tool, connected peripherals can be accessed by any computer within the same LAN as if they were locally connected. Note: Works only within the same subnet; not supported over VPN or the internet.
- GIGABIT NETWORK & USB 3.0 PERFORMANCE: Built with a high-performance 880MHz Dual-Core CPU and 4Gbit DDR RAM to ensure smooth, low-latency USB over IP transmission. Combined with a Gigabit Ethernet port and USB 3.1 Gen 1 support (up to 5Gbps), it delivers reliable performance for data-intensive tasks such as scanning and large file transfers.
- EXCLUSIVE ONE-TO-ONE CONNECTION: Features a secure single-user access system to ensure data integrity and stable performance. While devices are visible to multiple users on the network, only one computer can connect and control a specific device at a time, preventing data conflicts. Ideal for sensitive hardware like license dongles and security keys.
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY WITH CLEAR LIMITATIONS: Supports standard USB peripherals including printers, scanners, flash drives, and software dongles. Backward compatible with USB 2.0/1.1. Please Note: Not compatible with protocol-converting devices (e.g., USB-to-Serial, CAN adapters) or wireless USB receivers. Not recommended for real-time isochronous devices such as webcams or audio equipment.
Docker and network visibility
Docker on macOS or Windows can return misleading results: the container runs inside a virtual machine, and its NAT may respond to probes. The project advises running LAN Orangutan directly on the host for this scenario. On routed networks, scans may not show MAC addresses or vendor names; those details are obtained through ARP on the same network segment, so they may be unavailable across a router.
Secure the dashboard
A network-accessible dashboard needs deliberate protection. LAN Orangutan requires initial password setup by default and stores the password as a bcrypt hash. It does not provide built-in HTTPS; for encrypted access, the project recommends using a reverse proxy or Tailscale. Disabling authentication while binding the dashboard to a network address is unsafe unless another access-control layer protects it. See the repository’s security notes before exposing the interface beyond the local machine.

When a more capable tool may fit better
The right choice depends on whether you need a quick, labeled inventory or ongoing security and infrastructure context. The projects describe different scopes; these are feature descriptions, not results of independent comparative testing.
| Tool | Emphasis described by its project | Consider it when |
|---|---|---|
| LAN Orangutan | Network discovery, persistent labels and notes, multiple networks, dashboard and CLI | You want a lightweight way to find devices and remember what they are. Project repository |
| InSpectre | Port-baseline and drift alerts, vulnerability scanning, and Docker/Proxmox integrations | You need more security checks or infrastructure integrations. Project repository |
| LanLens | Structured inventory fields, topology context, network-change awareness, notification rules, and CMDB/i-doit export | You need richer documentation, topology signals, alerts, or inventory exports. Project repository |
Pick based on the work you actually need done: a low-friction device list, deeper security monitoring, or a more structured inventory. Also consider where the scanner will run and whether that host can see the networks and peers you want to discover.
