If the big national carriers’ prices or plan terms do not fit, compare alternatives by the network they use in your area, the data you actually get at high speed, and the full recurring bill. Tello, Visible, Mint Mobile, and US Mobile are options to investigate—not a universal ranking. Check coverage and exact device compatibility before switching.
What makes an alternative carrier a better fit?
A lower advertised price is useful only if the service works where you need it and the plan’s limits suit your usage. Start with the places you regularly use your phone, then compare data terms and the total cost over the period you intend to stay.

- Reception: Check each carrier’s coverage map for home, work, and regular travel routes. A smaller carrier’s use of a major network does not establish identical coverage, roaming access, network priority, or performance.
- Data: Look for the high-speed allowance and what happens after it. “Unlimited” by itself does not tell you whether speeds are reduced after a threshold.
- Price: Distinguish a recurring monthly rate from an introductory offer or a price that requires paying for several months up front. Check whether taxes and fees are extra.
- Features: Compare hotspot, international use, roaming, smartwatch support, and customer service for the specific plan. The available plan information does not support a complete feature-by-feature comparison across these four carriers.

Which option should you investigate first?
If you want a clearly stated high-speed threshold
Tello’s displayed unlimited example is useful to evaluate if you want to see a defined point at which high-speed data ends: the disclosure said throttling begins after 50 GB. If your typical use approaches or exceeds that amount, check the reduced-speed experience and whether the plan remains usable for your needs.
If you are comparing monthly plan tiers
Visible listed three monthly price points and showed distinct typical speed ranges by service tier. Compare the tier’s advertised speeds and the coverage at your locations rather than assuming every plan labeled unlimited performs the same way.

If you need to check whether your phone can come along
Mint says most unlocked phones work when they support 4G LTE/5G and VoLTE, and provides a compatibility check. That is Mint-specific guidance, not proof that a device will work on every carrier. Check your exact model and its status directly with the carrier you choose.
If you are drawn to a low entry price
US Mobile’s August 2026 comparison can help identify prices to investigate, but its figures are carrier-authored and dated. Confirm the current rate, billing commitment, taxes, and fees with the provider before comparing it with another carrier’s offer.

How to check coverage, phone compatibility, and switching requirements
- Check the carrier’s coverage map. Search your home, workplace, and places you regularly travel. A map is a useful screening tool, but it does not establish the reception or performance you will experience indoors or on a particular device.
- Verify the exact phone. Confirm that it is unlocked and supported by the selected carrier. Use that carrier’s own compatibility checker or support channel; a result from one carrier does not establish compatibility with another.
- Read the plan’s full terms. Confirm high-speed data, post-threshold speeds or throttling, hotspot and international provisions, taxes and fees, and any prepayment period. Check current pricing at checkout rather than relying on an old promotion or comparison.
- Confirm porting requirements before canceling. Ask the new carrier what account details and number-transfer steps it requires. Do not leave the old service until you have confirmed the selected carrier’s porting process and requirements.
If your current phone is incompatible, a new unlocked 5G phone may be one option, but buying a phone is not necessary if your device passes the selected carrier’s checks.
