If Final Fantasy IX crashes, will not start, or opens to a black screen on Steam, first verify the game’s files: in your Steam Library, right-click the game, open Properties, find the installed-files section, and run Steam’s integrity check. Square Enix specifically recommends this for those symptoms. If the game launches but crashes during play, follow with display and graphics checks, then test for software or peripheral conflicts.
Start by verifying the Steam installation
Square Enix’s [official PC missing-files guidance](https://support.na.square-enix.com/faqarticle.php?id= dalam) recommends checking the installation when the game crashes, fails to start, or shows a black screen. In Steam, open Library, right-click FINAL FANTASY IX, choose Properties, then locate the installed-files or local-files section and select the option to verify the integrity of the game files. The support article uses the older label “Verify integrity of game cache”; Steam may use different wording in its current interface.

Let Steam complete the check before launching the game again. It is the best first step because it checks whether installation files are present and correct without immediately removing and reinstalling the game.

Square Enix’s PC crash troubleshooting article recommends these checks for crashes during play:

- Fresh Artwork
- Rubi Asami: Illustrations for FINAL FANTASY IX, X, and STRANGER OF PARADISE
- Mihoko Ishii: Artwork for FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH
- Yuya Ishihata: Artwork for FINAL FANTASY IX
- Ryoma Ito: Artwork for FINAL FANTASY TACTICS A2 and XII REVENANT WINGS
- Switch between windowed and fullscreen display modes.
- Lower the screen resolution.
- Update your graphics driver software.
The support guidance does not identify one setting as the cause or promise that any one change will fix every crash. Change one setting at a time when possible, then test the same point in the game so you can tell whether the change helped.
Test for security-software or peripheral conflicts
Square Enix also suggests checking whether security software or the operating system firewall is monitoring the game, and testing with peripheral devices disconnected. Treat these as temporary diagnostic steps rather than permanent security changes:

- GET ALL 4 FINAL FANTASY-THEMED COMMANDER DECKS—FINAL FANTASY VI: Revival Trance, FINAL FANTASY VII: Limit Break, FINAL FANTASY X: Counter Blitz, and FINAL FANTASY XIV: Scions and Spellcraft
- BATTLE ALONGSIDE ICONIC FINAL FANTASY HEROES—Join forces with Terra, Herald of Hope in the Revival Trance deck, Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER in the Limit Break deck, Tidus, Yuna’s Guardian in the Counter Blitz deck, and Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed in the Scions and Spellcraft deck
- NEW CARDS plus ALL NEW ART—Each ready-to-play deck contains 100 cards featuring new FINAL FANTASY-themed art, including 25 Commander cards entirely new to Magic: The Gathering
- FOIL LEGENDARY CARDS—Each deck also includes 2 Legendary Creature cards with a shiny Traditional Foil treatment that can be played as your commander
- COLLECT SPECIAL ALT-BORDER CARDS—Every deck also comes with a 2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack containing 2 alternate-border cards of rarity Rare or higher
- Check your security software or firewall settings for the game. If you temporarily change monitoring or access settings for a test, restore your normal protection afterward.
- Disconnect nonessential peripherals, then try launching or playing again. Reconnect them after the test and add devices back one at a time if the problem disappears.
The publisher does not name a particular antivirus product, device, or setting as the cause, so these checks are meant to isolate a possible conflict, not to identify a guaranteed culprit.

Restart before reinstalling
If the earlier checks do not help, Square Enix’s general PC support guidance recommends restarting the computer, keeping the game updated, and being online. Reinstallation is also listed in its troubleshooting advice. Because reinstalling is more disruptive than verifying files or testing settings, leave it until those checks have failed.
- Restart the PC and make sure Steam is online.
- Check that the game is up to date, then try again.
- If the fault remains, reinstall the game through Steam and retest.
Separate a game crash from a computer crash
If Final Fantasy IX closes but Windows remains usable, continue with the game-specific steps above. If the entire PC shuts down, restarts, or displays a blue screen, that is a different and more serious symptom. Square Enix says a whole-computer crash or shutdown may indicate a hardware issue; those symptoms alone do not identify which component is responsible.
For a support enquiry, Square Enix’s general PC support article asks players to attach MSINFO and DxDiag diagnostic files and provides instructions for creating them. Include a clear description of what happens, when it happens, and whether the game or the whole computer fails.

If you use Moguri or Memoria mods
Community posts describe several different problems involving Moguri or Memoria, including a Steam Deck black screen associated with a failed Moguri installation, a black screen during a scene transition, and an older launch failure involving a Moguri Steam Overlay hook. These are user reports about different setups, not official guidance or proof of a universal mod fault. See the Steam Deck report, scene-transition report, and older overlay-hook report.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the issue began after installing or updating a mod, test whether the game works without it. Return to a clean, verified base installation before following mod-specific advice. The available reports do not establish current mod compatibility or a fix that applies to every version and device; avoid disruptive changes such as deleting registry entries based only on an older user workaround.
