Confirm Android version and device size
The navigation rail and motion patterns are more likely to appear on larger screens (tablet, foldables, or phones with certain layout buckets). If you’re on a small-screen phone, you might still see the redesign, but the rail could appear differently.

Google app redesigns often roll out gradually. That means your friend may have the M3 Expressive UI while you still see the older layout—even if both of you update to the latest app from the Play Store.

Edge case: carousel covers the top actions
On some layouts, the carousel can sit above primary buttons. If you can’t find a key action you used to see near the top, look again after the carousel lands on a card that corresponds to that action.

Touch target behavior
In some UI builds, the carousel cards are “hotter” touch zones than before. If you accidentally tap while trying to swipe, you may need to slow down slightly until the animation finishes and the card becomes stable.
Troubleshooting: redesign not showing, stuck animations, or missing rail
If your Files by Google app hasn’t switched to the M3 Expressive layout yet—or if the new UI appears broken—use this checklist in order. Each step is meant to address a specific class of issues: rollout gating, stale UI state, corrupted cache, or permission problems.
1) Confirm you’re actually on the updated build
- Open Play Store → Files by Google.
- Ensure there’s no pending update.
- Verify the version in Files by Google → Settings → About.

2) Force stop and clear cache (safe-first)
- Open Android Settings.

After updates, Android permission handling can change what Files by Google is allowed to access. If cards look wrong or destinations are missing, verify storage/media permissions in Android Settings for the app.
