Files by Google on Android is rolling out a new PDF viewer, aimed at making it easier to read documents directly inside the app—without bouncing to a separate PDF reader.
This matters because most people discover PDFs while browsing downloads, messaging attachments, and cloud-stored files. A better in-app viewer reduces friction: fewer taps, faster previewing, and fewer “which app should open this?” moments.

Prerequisites and what to check before updating
Before troubleshooting, verify you’re on a recent version of the app and that Android has what it needs to read your files.
1) Update Files by Google
Open the Google Play Store, search for Files by Google, then tap Update if you see it. After updating, reopen Files by Google and try opening a PDF again.
2) Confirm storage permissions
On Android 10+ (and especially Android 13/14), file access can depend on scoped storage permissions. If you recently changed app permissions, re-check them.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Files by Google
- Tap Permissions
- Make sure Files and media (or similar) is allowed
3) Check available storage
If your device is near full capacity, the viewer may fail while decoding or caching large PDFs. Try freeing 1–2 GB and retry. (A 50–200 MB PDF on a low-storage phone is a common stress point.)
How to open a PDF with the new viewer in Files by Google
Once updated, the new viewer should appear when you tap a PDF file inside Files by Google.
- Open Files by Google on your Android phone or tablet.
- Go to Browse (or Files, depending on your UI).
- Open a folder where you have PDFs—commonly Downloads, Documents, or a device storage folder.
- Tap the .pdf file once.
- If the new viewer is available, it opens inside Files by Google. If not, Android may launch a separate default PDF app.

If your PDF contains unusual elements—encrypted content, complex vector graphics, or malformed PDFs—you may still see rendering issues. That’s where the troubleshooting sections below become important.
Where the PDF viewer shows up (storage locations and file sources)
Files by Google can surface PDFs from multiple places. The viewer behavior should be consistent whether the PDF is local or discovered via the app’s browsing interface.
- Downloads: the most common source for PDFs from browsers and email apps
- Recent files: quick access to the last PDF you opened or downloaded
- Internal storage folders: for apps that save to custom directories
- Shared storage: if your device and Android version allow Files by Google to read them

If the PDF was downloaded from a browser or email client, a failed or interrupted download can produce a file that has the right name but incorrect content length.

- Delete the problematic PDF in Files by Google.
- Re-download it from the source (browser link, email attachment, or cloud download).
- Try opening the new copy.
2) Force-stop Files by Google and retry
- Open Settings > Apps > Files by Google
- Tap Force stop
- Reopen Files by Google
- Tap the PDF again
3) Clear cache (safer first), then clear storage if needed
Cache issues can cause rendering failures after an update.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Files by Google
- Tap Storage
- Select Clear cache
- Retry opening the PDF
If it still fails: you can choose Clear storage. This may reset app settings and require you to sign in again for some features.
4) Try opening the PDF from a different location
If the PDF came from a messaging app, it may be stored in a directory with partial permissions. Copy it to a known folder like Downloads, then try again.

- Open the copied file from Downloads
5) Use Android’s default viewer as a fallback
If the new viewer can’t handle a particular PDF, a dedicated PDF app may render it correctly.
- From Files by Google, tap the PDF file.
- If Android prompts you to choose an app, select your preferred PDF viewer.
- Open the file again.
If the prompt doesn’t appear, you may need to reset defaults in Android settings.
6) Identify encrypted PDFs or unusual file formats
Many “looks corrupted” issues are actually encrypted PDFs (password-protected) or PDFs created with nonstandard features. If a file was shared with a password, try opening it in a known PDF reader that supports encryption.
Scanned PDFs are usually fine, but very large scans (300+ DPI across many pages) can stress low-end devices.

Because this kind of update can roll out gradually, you might not see the in-app viewer immediately—even if you updated Files by Google.

1) Confirm you’re on the latest app version
In Play Store, open the app listing and check the version number shown on the “About” card (or in the app’s store details). After updating, fully restart your phone if you still don’t see the new behavior.
2) Re-check app permissions after OS updates
Android sometimes changes or tightens permissions after a system update. If Files by Google can’t read your file reliably, it may fall back to other handling.
3) Clear cache and reopen
A stale cache can make the app behave like it hasn’t received the viewer update yet. Clear cache as described earlier, then retry.

4) Test with a known-good PDF
Use a simple public PDF (short, text-based, 1–3 pages). If that opens with the viewer, but your other PDFs fail, the issue is likely file-specific (encryption, corruption, or size).

Use a dedicated PDF reader

- Install a trusted PDF reader from Google Play
- Set it as your default for PDFs (Android settings or app prompt)
- Keep Files by Google for searching and file management
Read PDFs via a browser
Many mobile browsers can preview PDFs, which is useful for quick checks when the in-app viewer struggles.

- Export it to a new PDF (same content, new file structure)

Does the new PDF viewer require an internet connection?

Will the new viewer replace my default PDF app?
