If Windows shows File System Error (-2147219196) when you open Microsoft Photos or another app, try closing and reopening it, checking for updates, and then using Windows’ built-in Repair or Reset options. Microsoft does not document a guaranteed fix or a confirmed single cause for this particular code, so treat these steps as troubleshooting rather than a certain cure.
What File System Error -2147219196 means
Microsoft Q&A users have reported the message when opening photographs in Photos, and a later community thread describes it appearing with Photos and other apps, including Calculator. These posts establish that people have encountered the error in those situations; they do not confirm a common cause. Microsoft Q&A community replies suggest actions such as re-registering an app package or resetting an app, but reports are mixed and are not a validated universal fix.

Try these steps in order
1. Close and reopen the affected app
Close the app completely, then launch it again and retry. If the message appears while opening a photo, note whether it happens with one image or several. You can also try opening the image with another viewer; that can help narrow down whether the immediate problem is limited to one app, but it does not by itself diagnose the cause.

2. Install available Windows and Store app updates
Check Windows Update and update the affected app through Microsoft Store. Microsoft’s instructions for Store-app problems include checking for updates before moving on to repair, reset, or reinstall steps. See Microsoft’s guidance for fixing problems with Microsoft Store apps.
3. Repair the app, then Reset if needed
Microsoft says some apps can be repaired when they are not working correctly. Repair is the lower-impact app-level option; if it is unavailable or does not help, Reset is the next step. Availability varies by app.

- Windows 11: Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find the affected app, open its menu, choose Advanced options if shown, then select Repair.
- Windows 10: Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Select the affected app and choose Advanced options if shown, then select Repair.
- If Repair is not offered or does not resolve the problem, return to the same app options and choose Reset, if available. Reset is a stronger app-level action and may clear app data or settings.

If the app remains unusable after the earlier steps, uninstall and reinstall it using Microsoft Store. For Store apps, Microsoft directs users to the Store’s Library to reinstall. Follow Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting guidance for the current steps.

Avoid treating community instructions to remove protected WindowsApps folders or broadly change permissions as routine fixes. The official guidance supports built-in repair, reset, and Store reinstall routes instead.
Need to view photos while troubleshooting?
Microsoft says Photos Legacy remains available for people who prefer the older Photos app. It can provide an alternative way to view images, but Microsoft does not identify it as a repair for error -2147219196. Details are in Microsoft’s Photos app help.

When to look beyond the app
If the error affects multiple unrelated apps, or persists after the steps above, seek help through Windows support channels or an appropriate technical support provider. The reports and Microsoft guidance cited here do not establish a specific underlying cause, so avoid destructive steps such as a full Windows reset based only on this message.
