1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows file sharing problems can involve discovery, SMB connectivity, sign-in credentials, or folder permissions; fixing one layer does not automatically fix the others. Start by confirming both PCs are on the same trusted local network, set the host’s network profile to Private, and try opening the share directly with a UNC path such as \\ComputerName\ShareName.
Then check discovery settings and services, the host’s firewall rules, both share and NTFS permissions, and the account credentials you use. Avoid enabling SMB1 or guest access as a general fix: modern Windows security settings can block insecure legacy connections.

Identify the type of file sharing failure
Before changing settings, note what happens:
- PC does not appear in File Explorer > Network: Often a discovery or network profile issue. Direct UNC access may still work.
- “Network path was not found” or error 0x80070035: Check that the host is online, on the same local network, and reachable by name or IP.
- Username or password is rejected: Check saved credentials and use the host account’s password, not its Windows Hello PIN.
- Share opens but a folder or file says “Access denied”: Check both share permissions and NTFS permissions.
- An older NAS or other device cannot connect: It may rely on guest access or lack SMB signing support, which current Windows security settings can reject.
Network discovery, SMB connectivity, authentication, and file permissions are separate layers. Microsoft’s file-sharing guidance explains the Windows sharing basics.
Before troubleshooting: check the network and host
Confirm that both computers are on the same local network. A guest Wi-Fi network, different VLAN, VPN, or separate router can prevent discovery and SMB access even if both PCs have Internet access. Make sure the host PC is powered on, awake, connected, and still has the shared folder and share name.

On the client, open File Explorer, select the address bar, and try these paths, replacing the examples with the host and share names:
- Host: \\ComputerName
- Specific share: \\ComputerName\ShareName
- By IP address: \\192.168.1.20\ShareName
If the host name fails but its IP address works, investigate name resolution. If both fail, continue with the host’s profile, firewall, SMB, and permissions.
Set the network profile to Private
Use a Private profile only on a network you trust. Windows uses the Public profile to limit discoverability and sharing on untrusted networks.

- Select the connected network or its Properties, then set Network profile to Private.
Enable Network discovery and File and printer sharing
These settings help PCs appear in File Explorer’s Network view and allow file sharing on the selected profile. Discovery is not required if you can already connect directly with a UNC path.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Network & internet.
- Select Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings.
- Under Private networks, turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet.
- Select Sharing options.
- Under Private, turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing.
You can also select the Network view in File Explorer and use the banner option if Windows reports that network discovery is turned off. Do not enable sharing on a Public network unless you have a specific, understood need.
Start the services used for network discovery
If computers do not appear in File Explorer’s Network view, Microsoft recommends setting these services to start automatically on the computers involved. They affect discovery and device publication; they do not bypass SMB authentication or folder permissions.
- Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and select OK.
- For each service below, right-click it and select Properties.
- If it is stopped, select Start. Set Startup type to Automatic, then select Apply and OK.
- Function Discovery Provider Host
- Function Discovery Resource Publication
- SSDP Discovery
- UPnP Device Host
Share the folder using the Windows sharing options
Windows 11
- In File Explorer, right-click the file or folder and select Show more options.
- Select Give access to > Specific people.
- Choose the intended user, or Everyone if appropriate for your trusted network, then select Share.
Windows 10
- In File Explorer, right-click the file or folder.
- Select Give access to > Specific people.
- Choose the intended user, or Everyone if appropriate, then select Share.
To see shares available locally on the host, enter \\localhost in File Explorer. A user-profile folder shown there does not mean all of its files are publicly shared. HomeGroup instructions are outdated; HomeGroup was removed from Windows 10.

Check share and NTFS permissions
A remote user must be permitted by both the folder’s share permissions and its NTFS permissions. The more restrictive permission controls the effective access. For example, permission to read at the share level does not allow changes if NTFS permissions deny them.
- On the host, right-click the shared folder and select Properties.
- Check the Sharing tab. Select Advanced Sharing if you need to inspect the share configuration and its permissions.
- Open the Security tab and confirm that the account or group used remotely has the required NTFS rights.
- Test the actual access through the UNC share path, not only by checking the folder locally.
Selecting Everyone in the sharing wizard does not override the folder’s Security tab or grant unrestricted file-system access.
Use the host account’s password and clear saved credentials
When Windows prompts for credentials, use an account on the host PC, in a form such as HOSTNAME\username, and enter that account’s password. A Windows Hello PIN is a device-specific sign-in method, not the account password used for network sharing. See Microsoft’s Windows Hello explanation.
If Windows keeps submitting old credentials, remove the saved entry:

Understand password-protected sharing and guest access
Microsoft lists a password-protected sharing setting in its file-sharing troubleshooting guidance. Turning it off may suit a simple trusted-LAN setup, but it is not a reliable fix for devices that depend on unauthenticated SMB guest access. Since Windows 10 version 1709, SMB2 and SMB3 clients have blocked guest access and guest fallback by default in several editions. The recommended approach is to configure a real user name and password on the host or third-party device.

Only consider enabling insecure guest logons for a legacy device that cannot use accounts, and understand the security tradeoff first. Microsoft warns that guest logons lack normal password, signing, and encryption protections. The recommended solution is to upgrade or replace the device. See Microsoft’s guest logon guidance.
Windows 11 24H2: older NAS devices and SMB signing
Windows 11 version 24H2 introduced stricter SMB security behavior, including SMB signing requirements. Microsoft’s current pages differ on whether the default requirement applies to Home edition, so do not assume the Home default without checking the specific build and policy state. An older NAS, router, Linux device, or other SMB server may fail if it cannot support signing or relies on guest access.

In an elevated PowerShell window, inspect the client and server signing requirement:
- Client: Get-SmbClientConfiguration | FL RequireSecuritySignature
- Server: Get-SmbServerConfiguration | FL RequireSecuritySignature
A result of True means signing is required by that configuration. If the device cannot support signing, the safer long-term fix is to update or replace it, configure authenticated users, and enable signing on that device. Microsoft does not recommend disabling signing merely to restore insecure guest access. See Microsoft’s SMB signing documentation and Windows 11 24H2 documentation.
Do not enable SMB1 as a general fix
Modern Windows-to-Windows sharing does not generally require SMB1. SMB1 is obsolete and has significant security weaknesses; Microsoft says it is not installed by default in Windows 11 or in Windows 10 starting with version 1709. Update the old server or device rather than reinstalling SMB1 whenever possible.
If a known legacy device genuinely requires SMB1, first verify that requirement and understand the risk. The graphical option is in Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off, under SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support. Windows requires a restart after changing the optional feature. Microsoft’s SMB1 guidance includes further details.

Check the host’s Windows Firewall rules
Check inbound rules on the PC hosting the share. In Control Panel, open System and Security > Windows Defender Firewall > Advanced settings > Inbound Rules, then locate and enable the applicable rules:
- File and Printer Sharing (SMB-In)
- File and Printer Sharing (NB-Session-In)
SMB2 and SMB3 normally use TCP port 445; port 139 is associated with legacy NetBIOS/SMB behavior. Do not turn off the entire firewall as a permanent fix. If you use third-party firewall or endpoint security software, check whether it blocks SMB or local-network traffic. See Microsoft’s file-sharing ports guidance.

File Explorer’s Network view is not required if you know the host and share names. In File Explorer, enter \\ComputerName\ShareName or \\192.168.1.20\ShareName in the address bar and authenticate if prompted.
To map a drive, open This PC, select Map network drive, choose a drive letter, and enter the UNC path. Select Reconnect at sign-in if needed, then finish and provide credentials. Test direct UNC access first if mapping fails.

| Host does not appear under Network | Profile or discovery | Set the trusted network to Private; enable discovery and start discovery services. |
| Network path not found or 0x80070035 | Host reachability, name resolution, or firewall | Check that the host is awake and on the same network; try its IP in a UNC path. |
| Repeated password prompt | Wrong or saved credentials | Remove the host credential in Credential Manager; use the host account password, not its PIN. |
| Share opens but access is denied | Share or NTFS permissions | Check both permission layers for the account used remotely. |
| Older NAS or device is rejected | Guest access or signing compatibility | Configure authenticated access and update the device to support SMB signing. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Turning on sharing for the wrong profile: Set the connection to Private only if the network is trusted.
- Checking only share permissions: NTFS permissions on the Security tab also apply.
- Using a Windows Hello PIN for network access: Enter the host account’s password.
- Assuming Network view is required: Try a direct UNC path.
- Enabling SMB1 or guest access without a specific need: These weaken security and are not general fixes.
- Testing through a guest network, VPN, or isolated Wi-Fi: Verify both PCs can communicate on the same local network.
FAQ
Does Windows file sharing use SMB?
Windows file sharing on a local network typically uses SMB. Discovery, connectivity, authentication, and permissions must each be working for a share to open.
Why can I see a shared folder but not open it?
The account may lack share permissions or NTFS permissions, or Windows may be using the wrong credentials. Check both permission layers and sign in with the host account’s password.

Should I enable SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support?
Only when a specific legacy device genuinely requires it. SMB1 is obsolete and is not a general fix for modern Windows sharing; update the device if possible.
Why does an older NAS fail after a Windows 11 24H2 update?
It may rely on guest access or lack SMB signing support. Configure authenticated users and update the NAS to support signing. Disabling signing to restore insecure guest access is not recommended.
Will turning off Windows Firewall fix file sharing?
It might help identify a firewall problem, but leaving the firewall off is not a safe long-term fix. Enable the applicable inbound file-sharing rules on the host instead.
Bottom line
For Windows 11/10 file sharing, first confirm both PCs are on the same local network and the host is online. On a trusted network, set the host profile to Private, enable discovery and file sharing if needed, verify discovery services and firewall rules, and check both permission layers.
Use a direct UNC path to separate discovery problems from connection problems. For sign-in failures, clear saved credentials and use the host account’s password. For older devices, investigate guest access and SMB signing compatibility rather than enabling SMB1 or weakening security by default.
